500 cab drivers go on strike in south China city

SHANTOU, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- At least 500 taxi drivers have been on a strike for two days in Shantou City, south China's Guangdong province, in protest against unlicensed taxies.

From about 6 a.m. on Thursday, taxi drivers gathered on the square opposite to the city's government, and stopped their cabs before the television station and an exhibition center. On Thursday afternoon, most of them left.

On Friday morning, few taxis could been seen on the downtown streets. "All taxi drivers won't work today," a driver from the Nanxiang Taxi company told Xinhua.

At least 500 taxi drivers gathered on the square on Friday morning, asking the government to clamp down on unlicensed taxis and restore the market order.

The drivers said many private cars, tricycles and motorcycles were taking their business away, making their business harder than ever.

An official from the local publicity office said on Friday the city's top leaders would set up a meeting with the protesters and a six-month crackdown on unlicensed cabs would be carried across the city.

'Business is booming' for karaoke taxi

A Chinese taxi driver is reaping the benefits of installing a karaoke machine in his vehicle, according to reports.

Fan Xiaoming claims business is booming and his takings have "shot up", due to what he calls "Changchun's only karaoke cab".

New Culture Daily reports the driver spent £600 installing three flat screen TVs, 16 speakers, amplifiers and disco lights in his cab after deciding to combine his job with his love of karaoke.

Mr Xiaoming claims listening to his customers does not distract him as it is "just like listening to the radio" and he only indulges himself on the machine during his lunch break.

He said: "Many people ask for my number for their next trip.

"And sometimes they even ask me to take a longer route so they can spend more time singing."

In related news, the Beijing Times reports that a Chinese electrician has spent around £100,000 developing an "amphibicar" which can float and drive in water.
