Quote GBC - 'I never do long fares without payment up front, it isn't worth it nowadays, if they're honest they'll understand, if not . . . no loss to you'.

Out of interest are there any legalities regarding 'demanding payment in advance' for a long journey & also what constitues a long fare/journey in this instance?

thanks eze

I think we covered this one some time ago - as far as I am concerned if it is good enough for Buses,Trains and Planes then it is good enough for us. It would be prudent within your bounderies to ask for money within reason i.e if you think that it is a ten pound fare then £11/12 would I think be reasonable in case of traffic etc - but be prepared to hand the difference back at the end if the fare was less than. If it were out of town then I believe that it is outside of your L.A remit unless of course they have something that says different.

I think if it's a job you can turn down i.e. out of your licensing district, then you can ask for the full fare upfront.

Inside your licensing district I still feel it's in order to ask for a deposit. Still put the meter on, and either pass back any change from that deposit, or ask for the balance, should the fare be in excess of the deposit.

But defo still put the meter on within your licensing area.

Thanks for reply Sussex
So asking for a deposit (at least) for a 'local' is legal? I wonder if there are any regional variations ?

I think asking is 100% legal, although I'm not too sure it would be legal to refuse if they refuse to give a deposit, within your licensing area.

I had one a few years ago, she refused to pay, usual reasons " got dropped off by dad", went home at 2am and it cost £25, wouldnt pay so after explaining the why's and wherefor's i brought her all the way back to my local nick. Desk sargent told her the score and she had to phone her brother to come and pay the fare before he'd let her leave. By the time he got there it was on £60!
The Sarge told me to stop my meter and tell him how much, the look on her face when he explained the waiting time she had to pay as well was priceless!!
