Tokyo Taxi Numbers May Fall on Government Plan, Nikkei Says

More than a fifth of Tokyo’s taxis may be taken off the roads as the government seeks to address an oversupply among company-operated fleets, the Nikkei newspaper said.

Between 20 percent and 30 percent of 32,000 cabs in the Tokyo area should be taken out of service, the newspaper said, citing plans from the transport ministry.

Nationwide about 40,000 taxis are expected to be decommissioned, the Nikkei said.

About 214,000 of Japan’s 260,000 taxis are operated by companies, the report said.

For a city that size that amount of cabs doesn't seem too extreme.

Maybe they follow the London model of staying in the centre and ignoring the outskirts.

Perhaps this idea might come to the UK eventually, but as Japan is usually light-years ahead of most of the world, I'll probably be pushing up daisies by then.

You may be interested to know that many companies have "Yakuza" (Japanese Mafia) running them. Japanese people do not like to lose face, so any gangster connections tend not to be mentioned....
