Mr & Mrs Punter at a taxi rank pay's the money so should be able to choose which taxi they wish for whatever reason , it is not there concern that taxis A has been waiting longer than taxi B or C at the rank.no other trade / business lets the customer takes first in a queue. ( a taxi rank is a place that the local council reserves for taxis only so they can park and be found by the public looking for a taxi) there is no law / by law saying the public must take the first taxi, it is only the taxi trade that considers this to be the norm.

Wot, you mean you're not allowed to ask for the sexiest male driver?

Watch it Dusty, Toots has a b tech in origami

I mean, only Ms Toots would have thought about getting sexual pleasure from folding sheets of paper in a Japanese style!!

What would you consider a genuine reason for requesting a male driver?

Some might consider asking for a female driver, due to an irrational fear of rape/sexual assault, as being sexist.

I say irrational, since the chances of this happening are minuscule.

Strange also how many women asking for a female driver would drop the request and take any cab when told it could be some time before one was available or that we didn't have one on duty.
Does a genuine fear vanish when it's busy?

..My opinion is it's not ok

An irrational fear of rape/sexual assault could also result in a request for a white driver, or an elderly one, if a female driver was not available.
Reading the press or TDO, one could easily conclude that non-white males, under a certain age, are more likely to commit such offences.
Still think it's not ok?

This isn't a personal issue so personally I have no idea what joe public considers reasonable. With regard to your 'irrational rape theory' I think it's only irrational if you have never been raped or never had a bad experience that's perhaps left you with this fear, to be honest I haven't a clue why woman ask for female drivers, but, they do. They also wait for them when it's a genuine request. At the end of the day the paying customer can ask for whatever they want from the service provider and if it can be met then great, if it can't it's up to the customer to decide if they wish to take what the service provider offers or to seek their requirements elsewhere

How fair is it when the LA makes some license a WAV and allows others to license luxury saloons?

It's not fair, it stinks.

That depends on the original prices of the vehicles.

If they all cost around the £30,000 mark when new, what's the problem?

The problem starts when the WAV is £30,000 new, but the so called luxury saloon is £19,000 new.

What's wrong with councils specifying proper luxury saloons in the £30,000 bracket?

That soon levels the playing field!!!

unfortunatly taxi etiquette has gone right out the window  most of the drivers who work Dundee train station still have some and out of town jobs usually get dearer the further you go up the rank

So you think it ok to discriminate on the type or colour of the vehicle?
What about the type or colour of the driver? or the gender? is that ok too?
The customer is paying after all

It happens all the time at Brum Airport when squadies fly in from Afganistan to visit their busted up or dying fellow combatants, or to get treatment themselves for injuries at Selly Oak Hospital!!!

I had one about 10 days ago!!

And I'm going to tell him to take first turn?

Like f*ck I am, after what they have been through!!!
