I really agree with this one cos I couldn't work for somebody else now it's been too long since I did. The closest I've come to it is working in the family business or working part time for the college. I need to be able to set my own hours I guess :D

Sex, the guaranteed seller. It was something my friend and I toyed with a while back, if you'll pardon the pun

I believe you; I'm sure you did!!

I started driving in 1988 part time when the colliery closed. nearly 23 years later I'm still doing it.

1. Took redundancy and thought, I drive most of the time anyway, might as well get paid for it. My old boss knows a PH owner so it all fell into place.

2. Give me a chance to get into this one first, only been at it for a few days.

I used to manage off licenses until I got held up by armed robbers and was forced out of my job with the police deciding to take a short cut and blame me rather than go after the real armed robbers I bacame unemployable so decided to move back up here from london and set up my own business but things were looking less than rosy for that sector and I was offered a percentage drive for a local company and took the job as a temporary tide me over tried a couple of firms out then did part time whilst taking a college course but about the end of the course there was a mass walkout by the full time drivers who went down the road and set up a rival firm the few left hadn't a clue what they were doing so i ended up managing the firm then buying the greedy owner out to get rid of her and been stuck with the firm ever since

If i ever gave this up I would probably buy a completely different business one which you could run as a one man band possibly hobby related I certainly couldn't ever work for someone else as an employee I've spent far too many years being the boss

I think that is, for the most part, the reason why drivers stick with this job even when times are hard. It's better in their eyes to do longer hours than to work for somebody else, the strange thing is most ph drivers are working for somebody else even if it's not recognised as such

I am a single mum, 14 years ago when I asked my sons father if he would let me have some money towards a winter coat for my son, he replied "why should I pay for my mistakes", that was the day I decided I was going to get a job.

I managed to get a job on the desk in a local P/H company, I then decided I wanted to be the first female driver (that worked nites).

I became a strapper on P/H, then I was a strapper on the Hackneys, I am now an owner driver and have been for 6 years.

14 years ago I was only doin it for a couple of weeks, I never imagined I would have my own cab.

1) I've been insuring taxis for 25 years. My wife is 14 years younger than me and now 8 years from retirement I got thinking about investing in a trade that has been good to me over the years. Hopefully to provide a bit of extra income when I do retire and to keep me busy cos my wife will want to keep working. Bless her!

First stage was to actually see if I like the business at the sharp end, so I got my PH license in December. I now drive a client friend's PH on Friday nights and Sunday mornings. I have to say its the best "Reality Show" anywhere. I do of course come across some scroats but have met some wondeful people in the last 8 months that I otherwise would not have.

I've spoken with soldiers just back from Afganistan who've lost friends, a young lady Medic who patches them up. A charming Downs Syndrome lady from social housing and many other interesting characters. I love it! In the day job I just get to speak to boring old cabbies!

Doing the job has actually raised more questions about the financial side of the trade and I do think I might like to own a couple of cars myself in the future. If I can get a good deal on insurance that is.

2) I'll keep the day job for now regardless, pension accruel etc, then who knows? Trolley Boy at B&Q maybe?

The Vatican turned down my application to be Pope and I wasn't doing anything else.

I could follow the chosen career of many of the people I went to school with
- avoiding work, having children I can't afford, faking disabilities and getting the state to foot the bill
