Had a total nightmare today, agreed to cover a job for a friend in the PH business, I drive a hack, the pick up was less than a mile from where I rank, so agreed to do it as a favour.

I picked the guy up, the agreed fare was £6, and about a 2/3 mile run, got round the corner and all I see is a wall of traffic, police close the A19 and air ambulance is called to a bad RTA, I finally get the bloke home over 2 hours after picking him up, he give me exactly £6 and went on his way

Whats the worse paying fare you have ever had?

Did a London job once that should have taken 4-5 hours max (return).

I left home at 5.00am and got home at 15.00pm.

Teach me to go north of the river.

I was thinking about posting something similar some time ago.

Back about two years ago I quoted a fare for five guys (Cardiff to Newport) which was quite reasonable.

When I got to the Newport turn off it was closed (road works) and meant that I had to make something like a 5 mile up and back (10 mile total) detour. The people concerned paid exactly the quoted price! but is that right as you/I are quoting under normal circumstances prevailing.

Would it be right to say? ...........look we have this situation and I do not consider it reasonable under the circumstances to expect the quoted fare to stand..................should the costs be split?

We have a barmaid who lives behind the pub she works at. At closing time she phones a cab to watch her walk the 50 yds home to make sure she's safe - pays the flag drop.

Another (disabled) fella lives two doors away from a different pub and phones us to assist him the walk from his house to the pub - he does slip you a fiver though.

An elderly lady uses us to take her from her house to her friends on the opposite side (literally) of a busy dual carriageway. She can't walk far and the nearest pedestrian crossing is a few hundred yards away. But in order to get to the opposite side it's a 1.5 mile road journey.

Once got called to a house to be asked when I arrived 'how much mate ?', 'how much to where ?' I replied. 'Oh we don't want to go anywhere, we'll pay the flag drop (with a £20) and can we have the change in £1 coins for the leccy meter' !!!

I can't see why you couldn't suggest they pay more. Wouldn't hold your breath though.

worst fare I ever had was one where we got stuck stuck in traffic and moved about 600 yards in 35 minutes because problems on the A1 meant all that traffic was pouring through the town and jammed it up good and proper punter then got out and refused to pay because they had missed their train ! got paid nothing for half an hours time !

as a courier a customer requested movement of stock stuck at british bakeries dagenham, i had to send three LWB vans from here empty to collect, the goods went 5 miles into london and the vans came back empty after

and i charged for every single goddam mile each van covered round trip and made a mint......lol

not my best, but quite handy, lol

It could possibly be argued that there's an implied term in the contract that if there are inordinate delays or detours then an extra charge can be added. However, the law may be one thing, but actually getting the money is another matter.

Which is why I normally engage my meter even if a price has been agreed. Because as we all know they often change their mind, want to go elsewhere, pick up someone on the way, are going somewhere other than where they claimed they were going etc.

Of course, it can still be difficult to get anything extra, but you can point to the meter, tell them that you hadn't agreed to whatever and try getting an extra few quid out of them.

Not much good if you haven't got a meter though.

Dusty, everyone has an odometer, many PH use that and a chart of fares, or just £1/mile

I have always found it odd that they are called odometers; haven't you?

Odograph I could understand, but odometer seems strange to me!!

Doesn't help when they pop in to get some cash - "two minutes" - and they come back 20 minutes later with a change of clothes and stinking of aftershave/perfume. :-|

Couldn't be without my meter!!
