Carlisle man, 31, detained in mental hospital

By Staff Reporter

Last updated at 09:52, Saturday, 28 January 2012

A man who got two innocent people arrested after he was attacked on a Carlisle street has been detained in a mental hospital.

Police were called to Botchergate in Carlisle at 5am after Lee Patterson, 31, told a taxi driver he had been robbed of his wallet there, prosecutor Alan Lovett told Carlisle Crown Court.

Patterson was put in the back of a police car and driven around the city in the hope that he would spot whoever was responsible.

He quickly pointed out two men who were arrested on suspicion of carrying out the robbery.

Patterson made a formal statement to the police – under a false name – and as a result the two men spent seven hours under arrest at the police station.

Only then did the police realise that a CCTV recording of the incident showed Patterson had been assaulted not by the two suspects but by one different man altogether.

In court yesterday Patterson, of Trafalgar Street, Denton Holme, pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice.

John Smith, defending, suggested the court would be helped by a report on Patterson’s mental condition since he had been detained in a psychiatric hospital under the Mental Health Act since last August.

The case was adjourned for such a report and Patterson will now be sentenced on February 17.

It is alleged that the streets of Carlisle are flooded with similar people, with many of them driving taxis!!
