There seems to be a lack of perception about Local Government Councillors ie those who pass local regulations about YOUR licensing conditions

so who are they [lets ignore party differences initially] Well they come from every walk of life heres a few

Lawyer
Bus Driver
Publicans
Teachers
Bank Managers
Railway Workers
Shop Keepers
Doctors
Nurses
Estate Agents
and on and on from every walk of life and many economic backgrounds with varying levels of education from every religion, culture, ethnicity, sexual orientation their all there

WHY?

Well strangely enough MOST because they care, they care about their Town City its enviroment the social services parks library's planning issues will a new Tescos destroy the High Street, should we allow more private housing should we build affordable rented accommodation the entire myriad of concerns of governing YOUR town or City.

What are the demands upon them personally, well their extensive long hours at official meetings, then meeting special interest groups [Local tenants associations The chamber of Commerce, Unions , for some maybe the Masonic Lodge, and of course their political party's } then of course regular surgeries and in some areas that can be hazardous you all deal with the publc and dont forget your home address and contact details are advertised] for their Constituents and dealing helping with their issue's bad landlords, drainage problem roadworks the local School ad infinitum.

So given who these people are and where they come from would you expect Cllr Brown to be an expert on the relaying of you road, of course not he will be given advice normally from council officers experts in that field, naturally if Cllr Brown was a builder he'd be half way there but a school teacher no chance, this applies to many issues cllrs will debate and vote on, naturally if a tenant in the street has expert knowledge you would expect him/ her to meet his cllr and brief him/ her?? surely it would be in their interest if there was concern about the relaying thats why the cllr exists to represent your interest.

Now I see that many of you believe all cllrs are stupid corrupt no good barstewards , and indeed some are but most are honest caring people with genuine opinions prepared to get involved and make a difference, you might not like the difference they make BUT said Cllr has no job security he/she can be sacked every 4 years by YOU.

So how do you select deal with or influence these Cllrs ??? YOU TELL ME

If a Councillor can be persuaded that your Taxi Association has influence of a "Block Vote" consisting of drivers, their families, friends and indeed the fares they convey then said Councillor will be falling over backwards to be as helpful as he can.

Mrs.roythebus is a town councillor and a licenced private hire driver. she is about the ONLY town councillor here who was actually ELECTED. Why?

Because so few people are interested in serving their community they can't be arsed to stand for election. whe she was elected 5 years ago, it was the first time she ever done anything like that. Most of the other councillors had been on there a long time and most if not all had been co-opted and never elected.

My mrs had the highest number of votes seen in the town council election for many years. that election was brought about by 3 other councillors having to stand down because they were also district or county councillors. Two of thos got the lowest ever vote in the town!

I fell that due to her constant contact with "the public" she is ideaaly suited because she gets to talk to local people who express their views on local matters. Being a town councillor taks an inordinate amount of her time, none of which is paid for and she never claims expenses. However, there's a few on that council who rarely attend; one lady only turns up when there's a "dignitary" or the local press around; another lives abroad for 6 months a year. How can they claim to represent the local community?

So we've had to have co-opted councillors for the last 4 years because no-one stood for election. Some of those have been ok, others have been co-opted purely on a self-interest basis because they've got their own personal matters they want dealt with. The problem then is that they have to declare a personal interest so can't vote on it anyway.

The mrs tends to get lumbered with traffic matters for some reason...which is just as well because most of the other councillors aren't professional drivers and don't have a clue about road layouts, traffic accident stats or licencing laws. But then she knows nothing about flood defences, which is the speciality of another councillor who is a fisherman!

Well congratulations to Mrs Roythebus this situation is mirrored all over the country I suspect, it really infuriates me when you get idiots saying cllrs are" thick stupid they should know" as you clearly illustrate that is not possible, its in our Trades interest for us to ensure that Cllrs are fully briefed on our issues by US. The message partake in the process or suffer, why expect SOMEONE else to take care of your business, I keep saying it ORGANISE YOURSELVES

Yes quite; the problem is when the local hack or the older p/h drivers complain to her about the others touting/forming an illegal rank or whatever, she can't take the complaint to the district council as she has a prejudicial interest. If these guys wanna complain, they KNOW who the licencing officer is but they can't be bothered to do anything about it.

Roy I am sure Mrs Roy is aware she can personally discuss her concerns with a licensing officer as it effects her constituents or she can instigate other cllrs to pursue the issue naturally her Party can take up any issue and present it, if shes an independent other party's Lab most definitely would be interested in the issue particularly if their Union sponsored and that Union has Cab Drivers as members.

On something completely different several years ago I did a one day Loco Driving course on the RH&D a great day lovely area.

Apparently not as she too is a a licenced ph operator.

she is an independent town councillor as are most of them. there's no Lab councillors here at all I'm afraid! She has to instigate other councillors to take up the cudgel or ask "someone else close" to forward concerns to the licening officer!

Glad you enjoyed the RHDR. I am a member there.

Seems strange to me your first one!! do not see that her being a licensed operator should prevent her from representing her constituents concerns and most specifically discussing those concerns with the Council employee responsible, I will see what I can find out.

You seem dissapointed theres no Labour councilors thats easily dealt with should Mrs be interested along with Union sponsorship if your interested PM me.

Would be a good idea to get more cabbies on the council through Union Labour Party membership ??? Just an idea

RHDR love it used to take my son down to it, was a member myself however it lapsed you've reminded me to renew which i will do! maybe next time I am down we could meet up for a gargle me barks worse than me bite
