Dublin Taxis "Day by day I experience racism"


There is evidence of racism on the taxi ranks of Dublin


Dublin has about 12 thousand taxis - around the same amount as New York. Because of the recession people now only take a cab when they really need one. This has led to artificial tax traffic jams and some taxi drivers having to sit on the ranks for 2 hours or more.

The pressure of not getting a fare and increased competition has led to tensions between black taxi drivers and white taxi drivers. In the past some black drivers have broken the rules and have been operating without a license. However, up to 6000 taxi drivers hold some sort of criminal conviction: if their criminal record is for a serious crime under new legislation they could face a disqualification.

I visited the rank at the bottom of Grafton Street which is an unofficial black taxi rank and spoke to Alberto from Angola.



Taxi passengers admitted to me they don't always travel in a taxi with a black driver.



White drivers admit there are tensions on the ranks, especially at the Gresham.



This black taxi driver Chinker explained how passengers racially abused him and broke his back light.

well allot of them are thieving barstewards, but saying that allot of the british ones are too, there is a foreign driver up here who started last year has an 07 plate passat and when he does a hire he goes to the bookies and puts the money he has got on a bet. there arn't really that many here anyway, 90% are white scot (there is a guy i got last month, told me and i quote "if i get one of them black basta*** when i phone for a taxi i will tell him to fu** off and phone again till i get a white driver") probably had a bad run in with one, i personally don't really like them either

you speak free an true united there are good and bad in all but if you do % certain people come out well infront of other but you not allowed to say so in world today

if house was the same you'd have to knock it down rather than refurbish it because one bad brick could no be replaced incase it got upset because it was pointed out to be bad so all the good brick have to sufer as well so bad brick no get singled out

you can have good an bad in any form be it material or biological an in today world you are no allow to say what is bad for fear of upset of good so to accept bad that hide behind good mean all have to be given same treatment
