Just picked up my licence etc for the forth coming year. Was given a letter and booklet re Inland Revenue from Inland Revenue, it goes on about that the Council has given you a business licence and that you must register with the Tax man

It also goes on to state that the Council has given details of anyone applying for a licence, you must register within 3 months of starting employment. Penalties of a £100 will be liable if you fail within that time to register, you will be breaking the law and could be liable to further penalties

The screw is starting to turn, so be it, there are still a few out there who have avoided tax for years

Is that for badges or plates or both, Mr Highwayman?

Yes, it was pay up time [that time of year] at the council, 2005-2006 badge and vehicle licence 158 quid

what do you need to do to get your car plated and what does it cost?

You really have to contact the appropriate LA for the exact costs and procdures, but the admin fee for a vehicle plate is generally around a couple of hundred quid. But you'll have to get insurance, which could cost a couple of grand, and have the vehicle tested by the LA. You might need a meter if it's a PH, but you'll certainly need one if it's a taxi.

The appropriate LA will provide you with exact details, for example specific size/age/colour rules that they might specify for licenses.

The only exception is where taxi/hackney carriage plates are limited, in which case it might cost you thousands.

Of course, if you are driving as well you will also need to get a driver's badge.

It cost me as follows

£45 for vehicle inspection
£800 for Comp insurance per year [got 60 odd % discount]
£158 for badge and Taxi licence
£190 road tax
£45 for mot
£45 for the 6 monthly mot
£25 for the external plate [one off buy]
£5 for the internal car plate number [one off buy
£250 taxi meter [buy only once including fitting]
a grand total of £1563 then yearly tarriff upgrades of £10 per year

then you got all the repairs, bumps, scapes and customer damage if they feel that way inclined, servicing, breakdowns, tyres, brake pads etc etc the list goes on, oh AA subscriptions, this is all put against yout tax anyway plus any faults the council find to your vehicle that they want fixing, oh nearly forgot, a medical is needed can be as high as £125 from your doc, if your aged over 60 think you have to have a medical every year. then you can start to put some fuel in your car and go to work

The inland revenue just turn up at our council every now and again.
they just get a printout of owners and drivers and away they go.
caught hundreds a few years ago.
i cant wait till they look into the tranfer of plates.
i susupect about 0% declace the money.

You should all remember that the tax man not only gives out his begging book.
He is also looking for the operators that dont pay there drivers the minumum wage which they are entiteled to, its ok to say the driver is self employed but? is he or she ??? if they dont own the cab or any of the equipment or is only a name on the insurance they are an employee so look out

not to mention the capital gains tax when you sell the plate. and if its worth over £55K or so the VAT as well.
