Sat Nav to blame for driving the wrong way in Daresbury

A POLISH driver blamed her Sat Nav for driving down the wrong side of a dual carriageway and causing a head-on collision.

Dorota Brzozowska, of Dagnall Avenue, Dallam, narrowly escaped a prison sentence at Warrington Crown Court on Friday after crashing into a taxi carrying two passengers.

Judge John Gibson said: “You knew full well you shouldn’t have been driving and were taking a risk being on the road.

“As a result of that at least three people and possibly four including yourself could have been killed.”

Victim Mr Conway said he was heading to Runcorn when he saw lights coming towards him on the Daresbury Expressway on December 29 last year at 2.25am.

John Oates, prosecuting, said Mr Conway initially thought the car was on the other side of the road but quickly realised it was heading towards him.

He added: “The car was 60 yards in front and he immediately braked and swerved towards the hard shoulder at the same time the defendant swerved in the same direction.

“Mr Conway shouted to his passengers to brace themselves before they felt a huge impact as the cars collided head-on.”

Another witness said he could not believe what he was seeing and had tried to get alongside Brzozowska’s car to alert her.

The victim was taken to hospital with whip lash injuries.

During police interview mum-of-one Brzozowska said she had not been sleeping due to family problems and had two large glasses of wine before getting into the car and heading to Warrington.

She added she had a problem with her Sat Nav.

Simeon Evans, defending, said: “From the minute the accident happened she has been disgusted with herself.

“This is not the way this lady would usually behave and she has not been in a car since.”

Brzozowska was banned from driving for three years and given a 12 month prison sentence suspended for two years.

She was also ordered to complete 250 hours unpaid work and is subject to a three month curfew between 7pm and 7am.

Judge Gibson added: “In normal circumstances a custodial sentence would have been imposed however you have a six-year-old son who you’re the sole carer for.”
