A mate of mine, yes I do have one, is licensed by South Derbyshire. His insurance was due for renewal last week. He sorted everything out and his new certificate was sent to him by email. South Derbyshire want a copy so he emailed them the certificate on Friday 6th June. On Monday 9th of June he received an email from the Council saying that they would not accept the emailed certificate and he had to physically take a copy to them. He took his certificate in on Thursday 12th June and the receptionist scanned a copy and emailed it to the licensing department. Now what was the difference between him emailing it and the receptionist emailing it? However on Friday 13th June he received a letter from the licensing department informing him that his license was being suspended because he hadn't produced his insurance certificate within 5 days. This letter was dated 11th june. Obviously he has the right to appeal and he has 21 days in which to do so. The appeal is not to the council though, it is straight to the magistrates.
Are they for real?

Typical lardy ar5e over paid, under worked LA staff dreaming up how to FU a system that worked, dreaming up new ideas, like ours with the "only 28 days on "new keeper" slip, then pay a £15 fee for full plate"

They will not accept a copy down here, but they will accept a Faxed version from the Insurance company. In fairness they are probably trying to make sure that it is cosha i.e not manipulated/altered..........as no doubt someone along the line will try it on.

All they need really is the policy number or even the name of the insurance company and the LA could phone them up and ask if the driver/vehicle is covered. Probably too easy though #-o

Clearly.

I would also make a complaint to the Local Gov Ombudsman.

The Ombudsman route is seriously overated, most of the time they act as a buffer between you/me in favour of big business.......doing their best to p!ss you off, in order to make you/I give up

My mate rang the licensing officer this morning and it was confirmed that they were satisfied that they had his insurance details and to forget about the letter. He asked them to confirm this in writing just in case but they refused. Apparently they are in the process of putting it in their policy that you have to produce a hard copy of your insurance at the time of the insurance renewal. This has not yet been passed but this is why he was being suspended.
