not taxis but very relevant

A driver who killed a motorcyclist while making a hands-free call has been jailed for three years.
Samantha Ayres, 34, was on the wrong side of the road when she collided head-on with motorcyclist David Kirk.
Ayres claimed she lost control of her Ford Fiesta when her rear wheel clipped the verge on a rural road.
But she was convicted of dangerous driving after prosecutors argued she was distracted. She was also given a four-year driving ban.
More on this and other stories from across Lincolnshire
Lincoln Crown Court heard Ayres was in mid-conversation in a long call with a friend when she veered onto the wrong side of the road and hit Mr Kirk, 26, on Baumber Road, Horsington.

Judge John Pini QC said while hands-free use was lawful, it remained a distraction.
"Using a hands-free in these circumstances is dangerous," he said.

Is this court case ultimately going to result in all mobiles and PDA's being banned completely ? If so where is the tech that will replace them ?

It was not the Hands free that caused the crash it was the driver being on the wrong side of the road that caused the crash...It's no harder to talk hands free than it is to talk to a passenger in the back..you can't see either conversant but you can still talk, and if your incapable of driving and chatting then perhaps you ought not be driving at all.

It's the level of distraction it causes.

And if that was proved the driver would be guilty.

For you..ok....but not for the ordinary driver....they have enough trouble drivering as it is.

Quite, a bit like the car we followed the other day on the M40 near High Wycombe, all over the place at 70-ish in lane 3, veering into lane 3 and the central reservatio. When we eventually got past, the female driver was still busy texting. Otherwise totally unaware of what was around her.
