Safer Travel at Christmas
Marshalled taxi ranks – Bromley, Cranbourn Street & Kingston
The Mayor’s campaign to promote safer travel at night has continued to be very successful. As part of this year’s campaign there are cinema advertisements, radio advertisements and posters warning the public of the dangers of using illegal minicabs.
There continue to be operations to target touts and on average there have been 60 arrests per month in 2005/06 by the Transport Operational Command Unit cab section alone.
Since the launch of the safer travel at night campaign the number of sexual assaults committed by illegal minicab drivers has been reduced considerably and work continues to bring this number down. Over the festive period the police will also be continuing to mount operations to crackdown on touts.
During December the weekend marshalled taxi rank schemes in Bromley and Cranbourn Street will be extended to Thursdays and in addition there will be a new scheme operating in Kingston over the festive period. The full dates and times of operation are as follows:
Bromley Town Centre, Market Square - between 10:00pm and 03:00am
Thursday 1,8,15, 22 December 2005
Friday 2,9,16, 23 December 2005

Taxi drivers’ help is crucial in providing safer, legal alternatives for people to get home. Demand for transport in the West End and town centres over the Christmas period is very high. Drivers are particularly encouraged to work over this period to help meet the demand, make it easier for the public to use a safe form of transport and to make it harder for touts.
