Having now read the Private Hire and Taxi Monthly magazine, I can understand why Tom defended it so vigorously. I can also see why it would appeal to quite a number of people in the industry. It has a varied range of adverts which must be beneficial to those looking to purchase new vehicles or appliances.

I didn’t see much evidence of news making but I did see a lot of second hand reporting. It appears PH&TM magazine collects news items from around the country and publishes them each month. Second hand news is better than no news at all and to those who haven’t read the second hand news, I suppose it becomes first hand news.

There is a lot to be said for the magazine and if the "personal comment" section doesn’t agree with your way of thinking, you can always pass it by.

My original annoyance was that the select committee had taken the Monthly fare chart figures for granted. Having seen the way the fare chart is produced, anyone looking at it would get the impression that it was straight forward and accurate, but it isn’t.

In my opinion, the select committee shouldn’t have used the figures as evidence until such time it could be satisfied that the figures represented reality.

Private Hire & Taxi magazine publish data for tariff one and tariff two only. If both, tariff one and two were straightforward day and night tariffs, the chart would be accurate. However, there is a marked discrepancy which is not highlighted when you have Authorities such as Hartlepool who have three or more Tariffs. Especially when those tariffs are applied four times in a twenty four hour day.

It should be up to the select committee to make themselves aware of third party facts, before they publish them as being accurate.

Best wishes.

John Davies.

There are pretty straight forward compared to the SATs results we get blasted at us for schools.

I don't think I defended the magazine, I defended Bryan Roland.

Agree about the content. I never read BR's opinion bit. I do however read the Brushford bit, nice to know there is a different world hidden away on Exmoor.
