I don't know how many times we've discussed this, but this must be a local rule rather than in the Act?

There's nothing in the Act as far as I know, and taxis have been running round with their roof signs off in St Andrews for years (ie without the meter on) and nothing official has ever been said.

However its a dangerous road to be going down. Followed to its natural conclusion, you would have every job going to the lowest bidder and all of us going broke

As I said recently in the Edinburgh Airport thread it's all down to what the local market will bear, and if fares are too high compared to local market conditions then discounting will occur - for example, if councils doubled all taxi fares tomorrow, it wouldn't just be a case of every driver doubling their bag?

Had a good one last night - I was the only cab on the rank for a good ten minutes, and saw some females approaching but they took so long that by the time they got to me several other cabs appeared behind me.

So they asked me to quote a long job, but each of the four went to separate cars asking for a price, then they shouted up and down the rank to see who could get the lowest bid.

In the end I didn't get the job, although I think I quoted the same price as the driver who did - when I realised what was going on I said, "oh, it's an auction is it", and they took offence at that so I didn't get the job.

well if it was brought to the attention of the council I'm sure something would be done as its an offence not to have your meter on within your area, unless its a school contract, how does the punter know they are not getting riped off :?: :?:

We have a taxi firm here that never use the meter and so far the LA have not done anything about it even though they know about it.

I had a look at the Act, and there's nothing in there about having to use the meter, so even if it is a local rule there's nothing to say that every LA has to have it, but I'll have a look at our rules tomorrow (they're in the car and I forgot to look).

All that the Act says is that the passenger musn't be charged above the official tariff, and that the meter seals shouldn't be broken.

How can you be sure they are not being overcharged if the meter is not on?

Different areas, different rules MrFF, dont know much about your area(st andrews?) but here in Glenrothes i would say a good 99% of hires around the town are "on the meter" maybe a price given for a nightclub return to Kirkcaldy. Now take a large town stuck between you and i such as Leven almost all taxis/ph are on offer with at least 20% off the metered price  Another mindboggler for me is,and i think you work similair to us, punters are free to choose whichever car they like from any position on the rank, try that in Kirkcaldy and it just does not work, every taxi will refuse and direct you to the first cab on the rank! Go figure? What is right and what is wrong either morally or legally?
