I have just had the worst day ever.
2 weeks ago my sons girlfriend gave birth to a little boy and they named him Rory.
Last week he was rushed into hospital in Nottingham with Jaundice. His condition deteriated and he was transferred to Birmingham childrens hospital. He has been on a life support machine ever since. This evening we were called to the hospital so that he could be christened. For those of you that have never been into a childrens intensive care unit, I can tell you that nothing can prepare you for it. Rory was in an isolation room and every member of staff and every parent and relation in the unit knew what was instore for us all and all eyes were on us as we made our way to the room. I have never seen so many wires and machines attached to someone so small.
After spending a few minutes with Rory we went to a waiting area whilst my son and his girlfriend prepared Rory for the christening. The hospital provide a christening robe and all the wires were removed and the machines were turned around whilst one of the hospital chaplains performed the ceremony. Everything was absolutly beautiful and afterwards we were all invited to place a gold heart on his pillow. I like to think of myself as the man that lets nothing get to him but I have to say that I completely broke down.
The life support machine is being turned off at 4.00 pm today so I would like to ask you all to put Rory in your thoughts at that time if you will.
Thanking you in advance,
Pete
I am now going to have a very large glass of whisky and be alone with my thoughts.

This is such a terrible thing to go through, that much of me didn't want to intrude further and so almost decided not to reply, so forgive me if I now choose wrongly by doing so.

All I will add is this...there is nothing that any of us could say that will make things any better or easier...there is only the painful route through what you are all having to experience...but Rory and indeed you and your family, have my kindest thoughts and the heartfelt wish that you may all find the strength to somehow get through this.

You all will be in my thoughts tomorrow afternoon.

Beautifully put, Mr Chilon.

And I'm sure myself and others like me who were unsure whether to post or what to write endorse what you say wholeheartedly, and Pete, Rory and their family will be in our thoughts today.

Let me add that my thoughts, and those of my partner, will be with all of you this afternoon and in the days ahead.
We do know what your going through, we lost our baby girl in similar circumstances 10 years ago.
Your post brought it all back and I had take a break before I could reply.
Words are just inadequate.

Stay strong Pete, there are some more tough days ahead.
You will all get through this.

A grown man is sat here reduced to tears after reading that story. At 4pm today I will stop work and have a few moments with you Grandad.

Nothing can prepare a parent or a grandparent for the loss of a child or grandchild.

I can't add anything else I'm a jibbering mess.

There is nothing I can add, other than to wish you and your family well.

But rest assured little Rory will be well looked after when he leaves this world for a far better one.

The loss of a parent is hard to bear

The loss of a child is unbearable

Thoughts and prayers will be with your family

I am exactly the same, and so so sorry.

When it comes to children it is so unfair and none of us can ever make any sense out of it.

My thoughts for what they are worth will be with you.
