Good evening folks.

Thought I would register after spending a good while just reading the forum as a guest. Hope it’s not stepping out of turn with my first post and asking for some advice or help! I have noticed someone in a similar situation to me, wrexhamdriver and thought I’d take a leaf out of his book and pick the brains of my fellow cab drivers.

I have recently (2 years next month) started up my own taxi firm. The area I operate in tends to have either a lot “one man bands” or a couple of companies with employed drivers. The biggest company has about 15 vehicles, and the next largest has about 4. Myself, I’ve got two; both Peugeot E7’s – one a new style and the other the classic style. The rest of the companies are all the single car firms who are happy with what they are doing currently, living day to day and not planning on expanding etc. With me having E7’s, I get pretty much all of the wheelchair work in the town and the large company also have a couple of E7’s in their fleet, but only used the WAV side of it for school contracts. Everyone else has either Saloons or non-WAV MPV's.

This is where I need some help or advice! I am looking to expand my current client base, and the only thing I pretty much won’t do is deliveries for local takeaways. I work on average 18 hours a day, 7 days a week. I did have an employed driver, but things are so quiet I had to pay him off. In a round about way I brought up the subject of renting him the car but he didn’t seem interested. Only thing is, I wouldn’t know how much to charge, and work wise some days we were both taking £150, the next we would take £50 between us. Some weekends a mate will drive my second car on a Saturday night, not through the books and cash in hand.

Everyone will jump straight in and say, shift one of the motors – I can’t! One is on finance, which is over 5 years and only just at 2 years now. The second (the newer E7) is bought using a bank loan. This was originally a Mercedes M8 but that was written off just before Christmas, and the insurance payout was nowhere near enough to replace it like for like, so had to go for a cheaper option and contribute a bit myself.

I know it will take time, but I want to try and grow the business and make it like a smaller version of one of the big city firms. Trying to offer the local customer base the same sort of service, but on a smaller scale. A lot of people use the largest company in the town due to reputation and don’t mind the fact they don’t do anything for less than the metered fare, where as I don’t mind knocking a bit off for pre-bookings.

I’ve thought of a load of ideas for promotion/marketing and will post them up shortly and hopefully if you guys don’t mind, you could tear it apart and spot some flaws (if any)!

Welcome aboard Tam.

With those motors have you blitzed the local disabled groups? There is good money to be made out of WAV customers (legitimately).

But working those hour will kill you. :sad:

Cheers folks.

Sussex, the hours are extreme, but sadly I couldnt afford to keep my employed driver on so I could get some time off. I have got pretty much all work from the local care homes etc, but have been toyin with the idea of approaching the ones out with our town, but still in my licensing area. Only problem is it could mean running about 8 miles for a £4 fare! I don't want to be seen to only accept the decent work from people when it's a £20 fare, but refuse the small local journeys.

As for disabled organisations etc, not had much joy in finding contact details for someone yet. Will keep looking into it though

I realise that to increase my workload and advertise it will cost money. Whilst I don’t have a massive advertising and promotional budget available, but would like to do what I can. My ideas that I have are;

Freebies;
Pens, key-rings, mouse mats, diaries and fridge magnets. Fridge magnets would basically just be a magnet version of my business card, but how would I distribute these and also who to? As for pens, I’ve got some cheaper ones and some slightly dearer ones, that are all fancy looking and in a “gift box”! Is it worth getting a load of the cheaper ones and putting them into business’, but if so, how many? Don’t want to overdo and waste money, but then I don’t want to look a total tight wad!

Was thinking of getting some ad-loop key-rings made up, as they are “different” compared to normal plastic ones. Is it worth trying to get hotels/b&b’s to put them on their room keys? Sadly not got a Uni or College in the town for halls of residence. Was thinking of sticking them in the front on the dash in the bin bit. We can carry passengers in the front so they would see them, and let them hep themselves, plus for those who just jump in the back, put a little sign on the partition advising to ask for their free key-ring. I know key-rings proved popular with the last firm I worked for in their in office.

Mouse mats and diaries, thought it would be a bit late know for this year. But thought about getting diaries for valued customers as a thank you for the business and getting mouse mats done for potential new customers in the industrial estate, with our logo and details etc. on them, and a year calendar printed on it to try and get them to look at it as being a useful mat instead of chucking it in the drawer and continuing to use their current one.

As far as I know I have a good reputation, but even after all of this will people who I am hoping to attract that have the regular / account work just see me as a glorified one man band, and not able to meet their demand?

I don’t really get much work from hotels and bars, they tend to use the large company as I can only assume they think there is a better chance of getting a cab quicker – some of the towns bar staff will phone me, more through being friends with them. I have thought about approaching the owners and offering them something like 50% discount on their taxis if they give me first refusal on all work from their establishments. Some have a list of phone numbers next to the pay phone, would also ask only my number was displayed. But how could I be sure I get phoned for the work and would I be best drawing up a contract if I were to do something like this?

I know anyone who has an account with the large firm are charged admin and vat on invoices, as again I worked in their office a few years ago. I don’t want to go trying to blatantly poach their customers as I have a good relationship with them – they will cover any work for me I cannot manage due to getting stuck in traffic and they will direct wheelchair jobs to me and any other work they cant cover due to being busy with school contracts. I have thought about trying to play up the fact I don’t charge VAT on invoices (not above the threshold currently) and wouldn’t have a service charge on the invoice either.

Where in the country are you based Tam?

The best advertising is the simplest.
Card every customer! Give them a card with their change.

Get the local pubs, clubs, hotels, guest houses etc to put your cards up next to the phone and leave some in reception or behind the bar. Check regularly to see if they need more.
Give the barman/receptionist/doorstaff a free lift home if they putting enough work your way.

Get an ad put up in your local Asda/Tesco etc near the door and the phone. Maybe consider a freephone if it's going to be worth it.

Oh and don't forget the huge advertising space on your E7's :wink:

Best of luck

I got a better deal from the bank for a loan with being a small business, than what I was getting with a financed option. As a result, I was told by the salesman when I bought it that gap insurance wouldn't be any use for this as it was a loan, not finance.

I don't suppose the competition will be complaining.

Have you sourced another box or are you going for another motor?

I think the salesman lied to you. I don't suppose that he put that in writing did he?

Sadly not Grandad. Only paperwork I got were the vehicle log book, manuals and certificate etc.

I just blindly took his word for it, as anytime I've spoken to others about it, they have always had it with finance. So I assumed it didn't cover the price if it wasn't a financed amount and when I mentioned it to the salesman about gap insurance he said that it wouldn't be effective in taking a policy out as the vehicle wasn't financed. Admitedly, he didnt know I had got the money through a loan, not sure if he just thought I had a spare few grand sitting down the back of my sofa!

You can take out your own gap insurance there are plenty on line
Never buy a vehicle and not have it covered by gap or as you found out your out of pocket if anything goes wrong
