Taxi Driver Online

For many of us, non Metropolitan Drivers, Black Ice can be a serious potential hazard.

One is aware of the problem and it is rare on most Main Roads because of the Gritting.

However, it seems to be becoming a particular problem on the new Housing Estates that have Mono-block Road Ways. It seems to be that these are laid by general Labours and the problem arises because they are flat.

No Ridge, no Camber, no Gulley, so the water does not run off when it melts. Leaving a thin sheen that, either a little melting, or some drizzle/rain, will make additionally treacherous.

No, I didn't have an accident, but I did 'skate' a couple of times last night.

I hate that cheap tarmac they put down nowadays on the estates you mention, even when it's raining it's like ice.

there was black ice long ago, its simply ice with no white surface which means you have no indication its there

You've not met the dreaded 'pink' Ice then. It's a Friday Night Special, where I grew up on the Suffolk/Norfolk Boarders.

My real point was that, on many of the new estates, the roads are Flat rather than the traditional 'bowed' shape, and made of those Brick Things which seem to breed Black Ice

maybe a good point regarding future road planning......... bricks have a differenrt thermal property and the thin condensation that forms on the surface is subject to freeze this time of year.
I think they slant the whole road i.e flat crossways so easy to reference the lay of the brick, but the whole roadway will have a gradient somewhere.... either all across or just down or up hill if there is a slant.

Might look pretty, but agree not good as kids are often running / skidding around these environments

We get black ice here, on cambered roads made from tarmac laid in the 60's, bricks are not a suitable road surface, they dont last. maybe driving slower would help? (crazy radical idea!)

It seems to be all the rage round here they even put them on the approach road to the train station ! Not been too bad this year but boy was that lethal last year in the bad weather !

It doesn't seem to be the ice so much as the heavy traffic causing all the crashes at the moment mainly on the A1

That's pretty grim design.

If the reality of finances and stress levels werent so choking in these times, I'd jokingly hire a couple of those brush people to go ahead of my car and see if they could sweep me to the pickup place.... save a bit of fuel.

The reality though, of blackice and bad design... is added stress and perhaps the unfortunate dink... all not helpfull...
... be amusing if the designers put their pic in the paper... be accountable etc... and payfor the 'dinks' etc.. ho hum.

And where do they always divert the traffic when they close the A!?
