I was Just thinking how hackney and ph work is like around the rest of the country?
I have been driving hackney for nearly 1 and half years now at first work was average I only work 6 hours normally 10am to 4pm or 5pm as I have some personal issues which mean I can't work long in taxi,
When I first started was making total about 80-90 per day but I've relised it keeps decreasing and decreasing and with the fuel and other prices sky high my profit is less every month,
Recently I've been looking in on my daily takings and its not good.
This year its hard to even take in £40 per day I know that with the rescission people are cutting down on outgoings and use cheaper companys, most companys are £2.50 or £3.00 anywhere around town and us as hackneys are abit more expensive so most tend to use ph more.
But I don't get how you can be charging so low with all the sky high prices.

You don't want to know what I took last week, a mixture of a shit system that keeps crashing and no work left me paying out more than I took home. It was less than £100 for over 60 hours work.

It amazes me how many Taxi's there are around Ashfield and no real night life in Sutton or Kirkby, maybe I made the right decision of working from Mansfield rather than Ashfield where I live, I suppose time will tell, but I am having to work over 60 hours in Mansfield to make it pay, but probably that is the norm?

Added to the Butlins 90's weekend which for some strange takes away 70% of our trade it was a bad weekend.

Bad, and it's always bad, added to the lunatic's that seem to be the only people with money to spend right now it's not a good experience one bit, anyway I'm trapped, there are no jobs for me cos I didn't go to university, and even if I had it would be just as bad.

What I don't understand is how folks who walk everywhere can be so fat.

I asked a guy working with me who comes on road at 6am and finishes same time as me and says no more than £60 a day.
Last week total I took in Just over £200 + get £200 weekly rent from my driver who rents the night shift off me.
But still 400 - fuel, insurance, mot, tax, I'm lucky to be left with 150 per week.
Hope work picks up soon with the paralimpics being celebrated in our town so lot of city people and wheelchair jobs.

After reading above posts I must be lucky after making enough to cover the weeks rent in 7 hours Sat night and 9.5 hours today, hopefully it will carry on?

Assuming, you're self-employed (private hire)with your own car, the only way to do it I find is to take work from more than one company.

However this will only work out if, a commission is paid on each job, rather than paying a circuit fee (otherwise paying a circuit fee of more than one firm, you're going to loose!), and that the companies are happy for you to work open-shift, or won't be annoyed if you turn down jobs because you're doing a job for someone else (which is your right anyway if you're self-employed).

If you find work drying up from some companies, move on and ring up a few more.

You mean it took 2 days to get a weeks rent? Is that the rent for your radio?

The firms here won't let you work for other circuits even if it's your right to do so

No I am a hackney carriage driver working from the ranks I also am on a circuit but still not enough work, you could be waiting 2hours on rank simply there's no trade here no more its all gone, the town centre is dead night work is only busy weekends during week dead.
I know of a guy who's had his cab on sale but there's no buyers as no work.
Most people use ph as they are a lot cheaper 9 out of 10 people getting a taxi in town are using ph.

Don't know what sort of work you're doing, but I doubt if many circuits would be amenable to that kind of arrangment.

Indeed the vast majority charge some kind of fixed fee, so econonomically it wouldn't really pay a driver to pick and choose like that.

And I can't really see the relevance of self-employed status if circuits won't let you do it.

If you are tied to the one circuit and you can't take work from anywhere else, how can you be self employed? You must be employed.
