potter around in a taxi (pay for a college project).... I don't particularly smell anything.... but after a while, after a few days.... something seems to add up
* tight chest
* slightly burning throat n nose
* a fatigue (not mixed up as any tiredness)
* light headed once or twice
.... often stop driving, to freshen up (feel what seems to be a fine fine fine coating of greasy nature over skin and clothes.

All the above are extremely subtle

MY QUESTION:
Q = How to test the air inside of a car?... I would like a "measurement" of my personal space air, made.

Been in garage to check exhaust and engine systems.... no evident leaks

appreciate ideas / experiences, thanks

does a diesel engine give of carbon monoxide?

get a detector

the exhaust can be perfect but if the boot seals leak the exhaust fumes can be sucked back into the boot and then the cabin

also, aircon (in a sealed cabin) can give chest conditions, and the pollen filters of cars should be changed regular too

I was just going to say the same, it's very poisonous and this could be the problem. It's a £5K fine or imprisonment for releasing the gas into the atmosphere if you are caught.

if the AC leaks then before too long the AC wont work so theres a clue, also the symptoms should only be present when the AC is running

Thanks for thoughts and ideas.....

I immediately stayed off the beans.... for a duration.... but the "effect" inside the car... remained 8)
... so not beans.

Air con = off... so think can cross that out
No water leaks, under bonnet... so think can cross out antifreeze.

leaves the seals as a good area to look at.... there is (what I think) a wierd design with this car.... in that the exhaust tail pipe ends around a foot short of the back of the car.... but apparently it is correct exhaust and vauxhals design for 05 estate?... could be a contributing factor in itsself.

The carbon monoxide.... I have found a £22 gadget from superstore to measure that.... but diesels kick out tiny amounts compared to petol.

Getting a wiff of the taxi - car- bus in front is common place.... but this situation occurs in car, in it's own space.

My desire..... is this..... to somehow find a gadget or selection of gadgets or test paper (personal badge type thing).... that will detect and reveal the "air quality".... what the #### I'm actually breathing

I'd love to go to Halfords an get something that hangs on the rear-view mirror.... and turns black if the air is fumey... sort of thing

I'll continue search.. cheers all

at a foot short it can be sucking in fumes but diesel smells so it wouldnt be hard to know

but to check, try a tail pipe trim till its past the bumper

yep the tail pipe extension might resolve..... and if it turns out that my discomfort and diminishing driving hours are due to a duff exhaust design from vauxhall, then I could find the designer.... and consider popping the extension bit, where the sun don't shine :?:

For that to happen you would have to have your heater/cold blowers/vents open, OR the window open - or you have not noticed your windscreen is not there  Somehow you have something coming into the car, more than likely the vents, they will bring into the vehicle anything that may have been tipped onto the engine........perhaps an engine cleaner of some sort/ anti freeze when topping up.

You might be looking in the wrong area, insomuch it could be a combination of things throwing you off track. I have in the past has light headedness through using a mobile phone/ear piece!

Just a thought or two.

appreciate a whole heap of possibilities..... also is subtle over time...... which all adds up to "something, somewhere, is a bit wierd"

do agree the vents shove heap of things into the car.... so I'll try and track down:
possibilities... then a way to measure.... such as CO or NOx and NO2 stuff..... or give up and bin the car as "unknown, but sick car syndrome).

cheers for now
