Uber are getting set to launch in Glasgow atm.

currentlly their offer to drivers is £150 signup bonus and a guaranteed minimum £10/hour with an extra bonus of £1 added for every single trip completed with the app.

gets me thinking, why would any owner driver stay at a radio base paying £130 or thereabouts a week for the privilege of earning similar money over the course of a week?

obviously the £10/hour won't last forever, but i would imagine the private hire trade in Glasgow is looking at a major loss of drivers over the coming weeks as many decide to jump ship, take the kings schilling and get rid of another weekly bill.

poorly worded by me i guess,

PH drivers wil jump ship in droves imo,

which means the current radio bases are going to be seeing a huge drop in revenue and fleet sizes.

what happens when the current big 3 operators half in size and combined can't match up to the size of ubers offering in the city?

they either wise up and compete or go under, or the cars who stay with them get more work

they could drop base rents for a start

I just got my taxi badge recently and was planning on buying a hackney plate, then someone on this forum warned me about Uber and i've learned as much as i can about them ever since.

It seems they want to become the global taxi company for the world, down in london for example when they were the new kids they were good to their drivers and paid £2.20 per mile, i now believe that has now been cut to £1.60 with further cuts expected, also they keep flooding the market with new drivers, i think they have 18,000 drivers in london just now, and are targeting for 40,000 by next year so the current drivers are finding it increasingly difficult to make a wage.

Also if you drive for uber you are expected to give out water and sweets, and have an aux cable to plug into youre stereo if the customers asks, if they want to listen to music or whatever.

And then there is the rating system, every time you pick a customer up they can rate you out of 5 stars, anything less than 4 stars is a failure and can allow uber to strike you off. The ratings is ubers way of controlling the drivers and more or less keeping them slaves against obnoxious customers who seem to have all the power against the drivers.

In short Uber is great and cheap for customers, but for the drivers its a race to the bottom and wages will get lower and customers will get more demanding expecting waters and mints, and access to you're stereo for £1 a mile, and also uber is non tipping so say goodbye to an extra source of income.

Ultimately i think in the long term Uber is bad for drivers, but short sitedness will probably mean the drivers will be taking in by the £10 per hour and £150 bonus, and will enjoy it while it lasts, but i fear that if eventually Uber get a monopoly then it will mean competition will be wiped out and severely weakened, then drivers wont have any options or power as Uber will hold all the aces.

There's no way I'd drop down to £10 an hour.

I think if the 3 main taxi firms got together and do what Delta taxis on Merseyside have done it would help

PLAYING FOR TWO TEAMS

Support staff have never been allowed to work for Delta AND one of our competitors at the same time. That would represent a clear conflict of interest leading ultimately to a choice – our team or their team.

Premiership stars cannot play for both sides during the same match, repeatedly swapping shirts with the changing fortunes of the game.

The same applies to Delta drivers… you cannot be registered with Delta AND another competing operator at the same time.

This is partly the reason our circuit doesn't allow hackney carriage drivers. Make a choice… radio work or street work.

The concept of drivers working multiple private hire operations however never arose until now.

Global apps are a unique phenomenon … offshore tax arrangements, no call centre overheads, shared international budgets and a split bag commission based system that allows drivers to sacrifice just a percentage of the bookings they accept.

The split bag model may undoubtedly appeal to drivers previously used to only a fixed weekly rental but there are other considerations to be had.

How long will it take for your share of each fare to clear into your bank account?

Are you happy for your name and an image of your face to be forwarded to every passenger?

What kind of back up do app services provide in the case of a panic alarm?

Will bookings go to the closest car (which the customer wants) or the one that's been empty for the longest (which the driver wants)?

If you thought you could trade off the best of both worlds by playing for Delta and a competing app, please be advised that this isn't an option.

Choose which model works best for you and make a choice.

If it doesn't work out, our door is always open…

I cant understand this "Hacks" and "PHV" conflict, we have dual badges, and the base has both on the circuit, get over it guys

we dont have dual badges.taxi badge holders can drive p/h but not vice versa
might be ok out in the sticks but not in a big city
the conflict lies in p/h beleiving theyre taxis and picking up in the streets."pirating"

Right, but are you blaming Uber for that? (taking an actual hand in the air flagdown)?

PHV everywhere have done that....till caught
