Hi guys chatting to a trucker today he was asking if we were feeling the bite on were income through the rise in fuel prices. When i said quite significantly he said why dont we do some protest also with private hire and hacs maybe hooking up with the trucks on there protests. Just a thought not sure how it would go but if it could be organised, told to contact haulage association. well am ready lol [edited by admin] of with this fuel tax hike.

I think we all could, and maybe should join with the truckers.

But from experience I'm not sure many of us would.

Maybe when diesel is £10 a litre some of us will wake up, but even then I wouldn't stake too much money on it.

I do think that the gov are finally starting to work out that if they carry on as they are, then they will be out in two years.

Business Secretary John Hutton said the chancellor was listening as he had done "recently" on other tax rises, in an apparent reference to the 10p tax row.

Although this tw** said on the radio today that those folks who didn't like the retrospective car tax increases should simply sell their motors.

I may be wrong but, I thought I heard, on Radio 4, the Road Haulage Association distancing themselves from the current action. The larger hauliers don't seem to be over-worried about the situation just yet.

With luck, it may grow and force some response from the government although I'm a bit sceptical that our trade could be sufficiently mobilised to join in.

As a slight aside, learned wisdom has it that the way to force OPEC's hand into lowering the price/increase production of oil is, perversely, to increase taxes and create a reduction in demand.....There's a lot more to this than may first appear.

Gordon Brown is on the ropes, there will be sweetners to buy your votes then once the election is over brace yourselves...

I have the feeling that if lorry drivers ever get classed as Essential users and get rebate status that this would not apply to us, and Taxis and private Hire operators would not be given that same Status...Its one thing Transporting essential food products, or Even Supplying a Public Transport service...but We in taxiing or PH always Appear as poor Cousins mostly because we do not have One united Voice...no national organisation group that we can affiliate ourselves with like the Hauliers have or Passenger Transport Have...if we want heard we need to unite under one national Umbrella and Put aside Taxi or private Hire differances...only then will we have a Voice that can be heard at westminster...

Nows the time and Nows the Hour!!!!

If fuel tax was abolished or significantly reduced to a fair percentage as in most other countries does anyone know by how much income tax would have to rise in order to compensate for the fuel tax shortfall?

How much is raised per year with the fuel duty? It has got to be billions. If there are say 30 million tax payers in the country, each would have to pay an extra £33 for every billion of revenue lost by abolishing the fuel duty.

This is a story from a couple of years ago but it states that every 1p of fuel duty raises £500 million. so if the duty is 70p per litre the revenue is around £35 billion.
£33 X 35 = 1155 extra tax per person

I believe fuel revenue accounts for 40 billion pounds a year,
