I know it's quite simple and I entirely agree with you but we have no respect for our owners anymore, they simply don't deserve any. There are a lot of drivers that would like to see them crash and burn so to speak. It's a shame but that's the way it is. I was brought up to respect all workers and they in turn would respect me as an employer but to be honest I think that school of thought is decreasing rapidly :D

decreasing?

it went out the window after the 1985 miners strike

workers/employees are goods and chattels to be used and abused

Why do you feel that your owners deserve no respect? are they really that bad? if so what makes you stay?

Toots, you mean your base owner that you rent the radio off is losing/lost respect?

There are four of them and nobody respects them anymore. There will be a mutiny and it will be their own making :D

I could write chapter and verse on exactly how base owners have shot themselves in thier own foot, feet, er feets....

anyway

thier level of self-interest, arrogance and expections that car owners+drivers will ignore such issues as feeding, robbing, over charging and general tackiness is legend, beyond belief

funniest was when a jockey snapped one day, after discovering he had been bypassed for a decent job, which was due to him by dint of closeness to pickup and the "long run book"

the female base owner (20st jabba the hut lookalike) locked herself in the office whil he proceeded to kick the door in, then again, he always was a little tetchy

my base at the time used to (legally) take bookings over the border in another town, but this had quite well-defined shift troughs and peaks, friday=good, saturday=bad, sunday=forget it, once (while in the naughty book) i called on and got sent straight over to the waiting spot on a saturday night and sat listening to the busy night back where i wasnt....

after a jobless hour, i switched the radio off and returned to the rank, about 50 yards from the office, after 10 minutes the base op came out asking if my radio was faulty, couldnt i hear her asking me why i was back at the rank

she looked stunned when i handed her the radio.............

Before i started out as an operator (with 1 car) i drove phv's for three different local company's.........I was sacked by all three over a year and a half!

The first company had several owners, one of them gave me a severe telling off(like I'd been a naughty little boy) over the radio so that every other driver could hear what had gone off. When i returned to base his throat fell into my hands as he pinned himself to the bonnet of my car :D

I started work the following evening for company number two, after about a week i refused to drive one of their cars as the brakes were well dodgy, the owner asked me to leave if i didn't want to drive the wreck.

The third company that i drove for was a great firm i really learnt a lot about the trade there, after being there well over a year i decided to go it alone. I arranged a meeting with the boss to give him a months notice, when i told him i was setting up on my own he immediately fired me. Doh!

I know how you feel I have an over whelming urge to start up a business it's in my nature it's all I know. I just have other things to do that don't pin me down quite so much as running your business, but, having said that I'm sure how much more cr@p I can take from these. Oh well never mind I'll get over it, she says gritting her teeth :D

A few things to consider before setting up your own business:

1/ This is my 18Th year in business, my GM has just returned from a 3 week holiday, he has another one booked in a months time for 4-5 weeks. I have taken 2 fortnight holidays and several one week holidays during the last 18 years. Wait till my daughter leaves school though :D

2/ I take full responsibility, the buck stops with me, it has to, there needs to be someone down the line that holds their hands up and Say's "that's my fault" that person is always me. You need to be answerable, and some people just aren't made that way, that's one reason being an employer doesn't suit everyone.

3/ I worked 7 day's a week, 12-18 hour shifts for the first 3 years after we set up, i needed to, to make the business successful.

4/ Timing is crucial when considering setting up on your own, i started in 1991 in the middle of the last recession, i would not advise setting up on your own in any business at the moment.

5/ Being responsible for keeping my staff in a job, something that few people consider, i have never laid any of my staff off, made anyone redundant, nor have i sacked anyone without extremely good reason.

Just a small sample of things you should consider before going solo down in Acapulco.

so you did, but she shouldnt....

anyway, waiting only looses the initiative and momentum

Thanks for the tips. I never rush into anything well I never rush into business anything. I understand everything you have said and I will bide my time until I think it is right. That buck thing always stops with me and I just don't know why, I would dearly like to have seen it pass me by a good few times

I don't have kiddies to worry about so my holidays are my own whenever I want them and to be honest always have been.

I just like the way you appear to run your business as opposed to the way they run the same thing here. Time will tell what I do but at he moment I have other things to do :D

Yep, that's exactly what i'm saying, i wouldn't have had to work 7 days a week doing 12-18 hour shifts if i'd have got my timing better Doh!

For a bloke who was coming on here looking for hints and tips, he's now providing a sermon.

Such is life....

When i started this thread i kind of hoped that I'd be able to offer some help to others wanting to go it alone and become an operator, or maybe drivers looking into the management side of PH/hackney company's. I guess we'll just have to wait and see which direction this thread takes us.

I'm going away for a few day's next week to Luton for my final training on our new Evo-Core system, which is being installed at the moment. We should go live at the back end of March, our go live date has already been put back 1 week due to poor service from our telecoms supplier. Telecoms suppliers and installs are a subject that i can really rant about!

Pro's and con's of telecoms anyone?

Guess you must have missed then! :D It was posted on page 5 on this thread by me :D
