Yeah, have entered my figures on there.

As for my costs on the Skoda, fixed costs are £6.5k a year, overheads £1.7k a year, variable costs £4.8k a year; diesel is £2.8k and tyres cost £0.006 per mile (part of the variable costs). So diesel is about a third of the cost of running the car, and I haven't included wages in those figures. At 23.4mph average speed we have to drive about 1490 hours a year.

It is a mistaken belief that fuel is a major part of the costs of running a car. I used to do tendering for TfL bus services so know a thing or two about costings. On those, wages were reckoned to be 47% of the total; if they weren't then something was wrong with the calculations.

Our wage bill is roughly 2 1/2 times the cost of our fuel bill.

All bus and coach travel (over 10 seats) is zero rated. We get the vat back on everything but have to charge it on cab fares.

What Grandad says about wages/fuel cost is about right. I didn't put my wages in the equation!
