All PH's All HC's should be black with a roof light saying either TAXI or TACSI depending were you are from. Vehicle can be TX or van or saloon any [drivers] choice no restriction of plates from any area and ply for hire in any area and do telephone work etc from any area. Gov. Plate by VOSA. MOT/taxi test done by VOSA. Council out of a job......job done! Sorted. Can be phased in over 5 years to allow drivers to obtain relevant vehicle colour etc. The minister of transport will read this and think it’s a great idea; they can keep all of the plate money, straight into the government coffers.
waiting for the back-lash in anticipation!

It was with reference to that particular idea I said it wouldn't work. I never said single tier taxis wouldn't work

In the truest sense I don't think a one-tier system will ever happen, despite me wishing it would.

Regrettably we have those stretch things, and there will always be punters wanted exec vehicles. Sooner have that lot licensed than not.

I agree with you regarding the limo's etc but as far as taxis are concerned I believe there should only be one type of taxi and that has a roof sign or is purpose built and can pick up off the street or be pre booked it would solve quite a few problems with the punters although it may create more with the drivers :D

Well we do all seem to be reading from the same sheet, just slightly different interpretation. :D :D All views are valid, shame the powers that be can't get a grip of the situation as well as the authors of these posts!

Problem is, with the ready access criminal elements has to the less regulated PH, mini-cabs etc. the authorities must be coming to the point that the only way to control them is to develop the owner/driver scenario in the higher regulated hackney sector.

Or do we just allow these elements unfettered growth, the problem getting bigger?

Perhaps it may be better to bring the standards of the PH industry up to scratch rather than flooding the roads with HC. Whilst I appreciate this may be a bit of a tall order considering the supposed criminal element within the PH industry it is an alternative.

IMO having owner/driver scenario in the higher regulated hackney sector will not make any difference to the PH industry. It may however add the appearance of respectability to a PH company when they have a fleet of HC owner/driver working their system to make ends meet
