Well get it written off, and get the VW or Seat version, at least if the DMF goes on them you can get the single clutch and flywheel system fitted cheaper than a DMF
You cannot get the single system for any modern ford
Did you not hear it rattling away before it went??/
Is it still under warranty???

If it's diesel, it's probably the same VW engine/gearbox as the Sharan and Alhambra.

It won't be written off. The decision for that would rest with the insurers, not me. As this was a mechanical problem, I doubt that the insurance would actually cover it.
No there was no rattle before it went.
It is not under warrenty.
It is a VW engine and gearbox.

Interesting case (unless your grandad) the flywheel/gearbox fault caused a fire, you/we are presumably, covered for fire damage, can our honest, upfront, straight as a die, trust em with your wife+kids insurers likely to wriggle?

id also be contacting Ford customer relations, if a DMF isnt suitable for purpose, should they be fitting them?

Ford Transit Dual Mass Flywheel?
I have 12 Ford Transite - 54 plates 350 MWB which I bought new from Ford. They are now out of warranty and have done about 100k. In the last month I have had 5 of the vehicles gearboxes go. They have had to have new gearboxes in them and each garage that has repaired them tells me that the cause of the failure is the DMF which breaks up and destroys the gearbox. Ford wanted a kings ransom to put new boxes in so I took them to non-dealership repairers. I have spoken to Ford Customer Relationship centre who claim to have no knowledge of the problem. At £1500 or so each time the gearbox goes its getting expensive. I replace the DMF with a solid flywheel each time but I still have 7 vans in the fleet with gearboxes waiting to fall apart !

1. Does anyone know if Ford have accepted any liability for this problem (in or out of warranty) ?

2. Am I better to bite the bullet and have new solid flywheels fitted to the rest of my fleet prior to the gearboxes going. At about £400 its a lot less costly.

3. It would appear to be a common problem but I am not sure just how common it is - am I just unlucky ?

3. Should I just get rid of the remaining 7 vehicles and let someone else have the problem !

The fire appears to have been confined to the gearbox and tray underneath. There is no other fire damage to the vehicle.

I have heard of similar claims being successful with the insurance where there was a fire as a result. By the way i wouldn't take skippys advice about the Seat Alhambra I run one as my other vehicle currently rented out to one of my drivers and the amount of electrical problems I've had is unbelievable ! I certainly will not touch one again

It broke down again on saturday night with a broken wheelbearing so i had to phone the garage at 07.30 monday morning as soon as someone was in and send it over there with the driver and it was back on the road by 08.30 the collapsed wheelbearing turned out to be LOOSE WHEELNUTS after the driver changed a wheel on saturday afternoon !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'll leave you to guess what my choice words were !!!!!

I know a bloke whos van was a month out of warranty, had always been serviced by dealers, and the turbo blew, taking the head and injectors to the great scrapheap in the sky and the manufacturer stumped up for the lot FOC

mind you, it was Mercedes....

The Galaxy is back on the road. The cost for the repairs was just over £800.
