When the forum was set up it was decided to disable the poll function, and that has never been considered a problem until now.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but it seems to me that polls can perform two functions:

1 To make decisions
2 To gauge opinion

The forum is for discussion, debate and advice, it doesn’t make decisions, so clearly function 1 is irrelevant.

As regards gauging opinion, in this regard a poll is unnecessary because any member can raise whatever matter they want as a topic, and members can thereafter post whatever views they want on the matter under debate, at any length and any number of times. This seems to me to be a far better method of gauging opinion than a poll.

In any case, if we had a poll, you would then be saying things like:

- The wording of the question is biased
- The result has been rigged
- Let’s have another poll!

In fact that’s why the facility was disabled in the first place.

If anyone wants a poll, then all they have to do is open a new thread and ask a question. But it seems unlikely that anyone will answer the question ‘yes’ or ‘no’, which would in fact prove the inadequacy of polls in the first place.

I suspect polls on forums like this are merely a crude and simplistic last resort desired by those who have insufficient confidence in their advocacy skills, so who might that be?
