My son has Autism And learning difficulties, he has to go 30 miles to a special needs school, for the last 4 years he has been taken by a local company, this year they where undercut by the same company mentioned, my wife was livid and got on to the council and told them if he could not get his usual taxi she would take him herself.
So she is doing, and getting £0.36 a mile, so 120 miles a day works out at £43.20 a day 5 days a week using her own car a skoda superb with a silent gearbox
The council have said she needs business insurance to receive payment for some reason, anyone shed some light on this :?:

business insurance? thats a bit vague, ask what form of buisiness shes running, if they insist on that they will demand public liability next

staffs have a rate of 25p - ONE WAY - for "16 plus" students (age, not group size.....lol) for parents who take them

No more than a volunteer driver doing hospital work does.
I'm pretty sure 36p a mile is below the profit threshold quoted by HMRC (used to be 40p if I remember right), so it's not hire or reward work.
She should check her insurance allows it though.

I'd Reckon at 36p a mile she comes under the Volunteers Guidelines and as far as I know they do not need any extra Vehicle insurance and certainly no business insurance...Personal Liability Insurance can be bought seperately and might be a good Idea just in case of a bump resulting in injury...at least your son is covered and at no great cost.

someones spouting rubbish

what contract? its a travel subsidy, not a contractual thing

•If there is no suitable public or contracted transport available, a travel allowance will be paid
Staffordshire County Council offers a subsidised Post 16 Travel Scheme, but some bus operators or colleges offer fares and tickets that may be cheaper or more suitable for you than using the Staffordshire Post 16 Transport Scheme - please check before you apply. For public bus services, please contact the bus operator directly for more details. Public transport contact details can be found at www.staffordshire.gov.uk/transport/publictransport

I had it before her for 4 years, she only put 50K on it in 5.

Anyway back to the subject she is checking with the insurance, but as she is not running a business, all she is getting is a reimbursement of fuel and wear and tear and service costs

Well...if its a Taxi Company thats putting in suicidally low Bids then she's doing them a favour...Im sure some of these companies are working for total domination of the LA contract market...and after they either acheive it or die in the trying then their prices will shoot back up and the LA left high and dry with not enough remaining vehicles or operators able to submit competitive tenders...that and the fact that you now have to jump through hoops and return about 40 sheets of information for each and every bid in the first place..The Jobs fecked!
