In York it's a two part of 15 questions each. First part on conditions and second on routes and locations. Have to get 12 or above in each to pass. Costs £15 a time and both parts have to be passed at same time.

In Brum the very first thing you have to do is pay your money for the application process to begin!!

When you have done that the next thing is an English language proficiency test and there are a few that fail that part to start with!!

WE are asked where such and such hotel/pub is ,no need for routes. very simple really.

Are you planning to set up a national standard knowledge test to sell onto the L.As.

I did The Knowledge.

I won't bother to go into any great depth as its world famous.

Suffice to say by having the highest entry standards in the world you can make a decent living down in old London Town, as I'm sure other areas would benefit from with more stringent standards of knowledge and vehicles.

And no artificial restriction of numbers needed?

Well you could argue that driver numbers are restricted by the length and depth of the KOL process.

The Taxi manufacturers have said that for years.

Agreed, as a quality control it is second to none.
There are no artificial restrictions on the vehicle numbers though?

Some would argue that with the birth of the satnav it is no longer necessary to be quite so knowledgeable and therefore would consider the 'knowledge' as onerous or an artificial obstacle. I however am not one of them

Once you've done that what happens?

What an interesting idea, I didn't realise they bought in their knowledge tests tbh. In answer to your question anyway, not specifically

Satnav is far from perfect.
The number of people trying to drive along rivers is a classic example.

There's a "no right turn" 100 yards from here. Been there at least 5 years. Scores of lorries every day find their satnav trying to turn them right at the junction. The divert is the best part of a mile through the worst traffic north of Dundee.

It can't tell you which pubs you are likely to get your head kicked in.

Where the best restaurants are.

Which hotels to use/avoid like the plague.

I'm sure others on here could point out a few more.

Satnav is a useful tool but there is no substitute for good local knowledge

I got my badge on 10th December. The knowledge test at our council is verbal. For PH you are asked the shortest route between 15 points, you have to get 10 right. For Hackney you have 20 questions and have to get 15 right.

In addition to the knowledge and CRB, new drivers have to do the DSA Taxi test. I can't remember being as nervous for many a year!

I think the highest standards in the world on a per-inhabitant- or square-mile-ratio holds definitely not London but Brighton & Hove. There are a number of tests, DSA test of course (which I failed two times after being 10 times around the globe by car) and then, in the end, there´s a practical test, where you have to find 15 (randomly picked) out of 1700 roads without any aid. It takes 2 1/2 hours and it´s physically and mentally exhausting alone. You can only have 13 out of 15, yet then you must find the others precisely on the shortest route.

Weymouth & Portland:

Currently its a multiple choice written exam with 40 questions (and need 35+ to pass).

few on taxi regs, few on local places and roads etc. (its a bit naff in my opinion as who needs to know what road a particular place is as long as you know how to get there?).

was a bit of a hoo-haa when a local company brought a bunch of polish guys over and they were allowed to have tomtom and help!!!!! wtf I say...

Then again back in my day, (about 16yrs ago), it was oral and consisted of whatever the licensing office could think up at the time. This was better I think as if he suspected you were weak in an area he would ask more.... seem to remember mine was conducted at the Kings Arms during my lunch break from running the desk (local cab office).... ;)

I failed first go (shame).....

Now things change over 20 something yrs ago when i did my test,

It was just Hove, or just Brighton, depends which one you wanted to be licence under.
Ask where forty roads are and (10 places of interest (some were older names), a medical
And two reference’s
