Some of these guys do compete on price too much, other things are more important, such as CRB, aptitude of driver.

I know some ph firms who have real difficulties covering the work as the drivers know they'll be better of some where else. They try to squirm out but the are contractually obliged.

Sometimes you can get a good rate, upto £3 a mile, and as for airports, the reason they can keep thier prices artificially low is, they more often than not you get a good job in return. Anyone done Stanstead and back??

See that's when being cheap can have it's benefits, as you will increase your customer base and hopefully get more up and back work.

During the summer I have mates who can do three and four up and downs in a day. They do earn fortunes.

Agreed, if you happen to live in a town where there's likely to be a fair bit of airport work, then you can afford to keep the prices to what the punter calls "reasonable" in the hope you'll get a return working. that's ok if you happen to work in Brighton or Maidstone, but when like me you work in a semi-rural area, the chance of a back working from the airport is virtually zero.

A couple of guys in Ashford do Gatwick for £60 thinking they'll make a fortune, like the guys near me at £75 a trip. the Ashford guys soon learnt that when they get double booked, no-one else will cover their work at those prices! So, people get let down, like the night club punters I mentioned in post 1.

I suppose it can sometimes pay to do a long run on the cheap as a loss leader, but word gets round and every job is a loss leader, so you end up working for nothing. Personally I'd rather go for the local runs at a fiver a time and the rate is about £1.50 a mile! That way I'm not chasing round all the time and probably still making the same gross profit (if any) as the bloke going to Gatwick twice a day for £75 a time.
