the driver in the first cab didn't know who the driver was in the cab behind and didn't hear anything - but he remains convinced the passengers were not going to pay.

A couple of female drivers have also told me they feel more safe with CCTV - again the perception is that they feel safer with cameras than without - does it prevent crime? well how can anyone positively say either way.

No those cameras only work when a bloke in a police control room presses record otherwise they are NOT recording

Of course they are recording.

How else can the police trawl through CCTV coverage at a later date?

That's what they tell you when you ask if something was caught on camera and they can't be arsed looking.
Camera pointing the other way is another favourite.

May I refer the Rt.Hon.Gentleman to the London tube bombings, the London Bus Bombings....loads of CCTV there that didn't prevent the carnage, but helped identify the late suspects.

I've done a lot of research on this subject and there's a lot of info out there that backs up my belief, including reports from various police forces that CCTV does not prevent crime EXCEPTIONS being at car parks, where the crime rate dropped considerably (theft from motor vehicles). Elsewhere according to the reports benefits have been marginal in crime prevention, and sometimes useful in detecting and apprehending the suspects. Usually the images are too blurred to be of use in a court of law.

Well in my book that's a good reason to have it installed

I think the entire cctv debate is inane - its up to the driver whether or not they have cctv and the more regulation the more the price
