As soon as it becomes obvious that they're making money/getting bigger, or something untoward happens in one of these cars with a driver who hasn't been CRB checked, they will do something about it. How can the drivers make money though at 45p a mile? That's unbelievable.

They can make money because they have fewer overheads, they already run their Vehicle for their own Private use so their only Over heads are Fuel and small percentage of the cars maintenance costs. If they run a Small car as many do they will can travel a 100 miles (£45.00) for about £10 of fuel and lets say £3.00 additional maintenance costs over and above their private running costs..that Leaves £32.00 for a hundred Miles all tax free.

That same 45pence per mile would be more like 60 pence per mile if it were taxable and that's getting up towards the fares that some of these cheap budget PH numpties charge per mile...

Does anyone know if the Volunteers get paid for their empty vehicle return miles?

Can only tell you that Warkwickshire ambulance and North Wales ambulance volunteers (and i have been with both while plated) pay/paid 25p per EVERY mile, so doubling up (cos they never checked) could see me getting 50p per every mile, thats was 15+ years ago when the flag on my meter was £1, at the same time West Mids Ambulance service CONTRACTED cars (unplated/unbadged) got 35p per every mile, how were they not volunteers but didnt have plates on their OWN cars?.....i dont know

Assuming they don't, they would probably have to cover around 150 miles to be paid for 100. So their fuel cost would be 15, leaving just £27. However if they had at least 2 passengers it'd be double that, so it's pretty clear they can make money. It's a wonder the taxman hasn't got onto this sort of activity.

No but they make sure they have 3 or more passengers on board to make sure they're making their money.

My "volunteer" years (though plated) were for ambulance services and 1 "volunteer" organisation, never had more than the 1 trip/passenger (i.e. one payee) for the later, on some trips the people paid so much and hospitals paid some (to me) as well

I have no problems with a genuine welfare-based volunteer service, many disadvantaged persons (i.e. OAP's) have to get to hospital/doctors appointments and cant afford taxi fares, its the services quoting against licensed taxi/PH firms who have to play by the rules that are the irritation.
