Cynical old me thinks that most firms take on extra drivers not to meet further growth, but to meet existing bills.

If those firms that take on extra drivers are only doing it to meet an assumed demand, then surely they will reduce their dues to existing drivers.

Or maybe they wont.

Hi
How much do you think it costs to run an office each week?

Loads of money.

But my point is not that owners shouldn't earn bundles, if they give good work to drivers bloody good luck to them.

It's just that I wish some (not on TDO) would be a bit more honest about it, and stop giving wishy washy reasons, when they up drivers, that don't add up.

I agree to some extent, but the original question said that there was not enough work for the new drivers.

A firm might take on enough drivers to cover peak demand, and to that extent may gain some work, but overall each drivers take could well decrease, and to that extent some could be lost and the firm could end up back at square one.

In the final analysis, there's always conflict between the competing interests of proprietors and drivers.

Proprietors are trying to make a bigger cake so everyone gets more, drivers want a bigger slice of the cake they already got.

Well things go from bad to worse! The amount of new night drivers working at the office has now gone up from 3 to 5 in just under 2 weeks.

1. New driver who has come into the taxi trade, was working days but the boss put him onto nights.
2. Driver from another office.
3. New driver who has come into the taxi trade.
4. Driver from another office.
5. A driver who has been off sick for the past 3 months so classed as new driver.

Above is the break down of the number of drivers now working on the night shift along with the original drivers.

I know all about how you need drivers to get more work etc, the point of asking on this forum is i was curious to see how other offices in other areas take on staff, i.e all at once or when the work has built up.

I have had an argument with the boss about the amount of new drivers coming onto the night shift and he explains this:

1. He is only going back up the the numbers he once had.
2. You need more drivers to get more work.
3. He will only advertise when he has more day drivers. (even thought he takes drivers off days and puts them on nights when they are not making enough on days)
4. Now there are more drivers he is going to impose more rules.

This is only a quick slice of what he said, but the bottom line comes down to the fact that it seems that any owner does not care how much a driver makes, all the owners care about is what they make.

The office is only a small one and only handles a small amout of work, a break down of the drivers is:

1. New number of drivers including boss: 20
2. Number of day drivers: 3
3. Number of night drivers: 17

Not exactly a great balance is it, especially when there is not enough work, so i may soon be waving the white flag and reluctantly be moving office!!!!

Any owners out there need a new driver??!!!!!!??!!!

It seems your boss likes his pockets being filled before yours does. Shame he hasn't got the front to be honest.

Why not get a letter typed up (different name and address than yours), saying that a new firm is starting up and offering new drivers a good deal. And just happen to post one to the boss.
