If we shouldn't charge extra 'just because its a bank holiday' - then why should we charge extra 'just because its after 11pm, or a weekend' ?

The reason for the higher rate is as an incentive/reward for the people prepared to work those shifts, working after 11pm (on taxis) is unsociable and more hazardous so there's a higher rate to compensate for this, working on a bank holiday means giving up a days rest so the extra is a reward for doing so.

If there wasn't T2 on a Saturday night at closing how many cabbies would think its not worth the effort/risk and not bother working, do a day shift instead when it's safer and the rate is the same ? When they changed the licensing laws there were'nt enough cabs around at 4am closing (theyd all done their money so gone home) so the LA introduced an extra 80p on every fare between 2am-6am which encouraged drivers to stay out.

Exactly, it is not ripping the guts out of the punters...80p is neither here or there to the punters at that time of the morning - time and a half/double time is a different story. As mentioned earlier someone having to go to work has to pay - someone who has a choice to go out.....or not, will make a difference to your/my trade if funds are limited.

Its not just BH that have the issue, what about LA's that insist on a 100% WAV fleet, most are now 7/8 seaters, with only T1 for daytime useage, so punters can get a 8 seater (worth 2x4 seaters) at T1, except all our base vehicles (PH and HC) use a rate sheet and 8 seats is the "extra" rate.......... oh dear......

in effect the DIS/DIS as enforced by the LA's has cut the number of vehicles required, 20 years ago there were very few +4 seaters available off a rank

Yes it was British Leyland making the Rover/Land Rover parts.

I was working in the toolroom at our local Leyland plant and parity for us was with Cowley. We went from £68 per week to £98 per week when we got parity.

That was a big leap, it also shows the disparity in this country from area to area.

Not quite...try a pound in Liverpool.

Oh, and the Valleys is not ALL of Wales, stay up to pace - we are talking about Cardiff. Oh, and Cardiff (check it out) is not in the Valleys

WHAT!!!.......I am so glad you are not my taxi driver   . Ross on Wye/M4 etc are the most obvious routes - even a poundland map/sat nav (if they do them) would not send you through the Valleys, or anywhere near them in order to get to Cardiff - if you take the most direct route.

I have been there not once....I have been there hundreds of times - I also live on the fringe of the Valleys, high up the side of a Valley with a view for miles and know the areas reasonably well. Trust me, you need to check your topography, or if you like - your map.

I have been up North and down South, and never have I been through the Valleys there or back.

Rochdale is the nearest that I have had to a long job.......no Valleys there or back  I do not work out of an office, so long, long, long jobs are not going to come very often. Anyway, to get in or out of Cardiff.....the M4 does not run through the Valleys, and neither does Ross on Wye. :)

Before I ran thru an office I had longer jobs like here to Hull, and here, pickup in Heanor, drop LHR

You wont get LJ's via a base, get em yourself, website, google ads, 118me....
