Cheers Ven2112, had seen a few of your posts and noticed you were ex HGV so I was hoping you would give me your opinion.

I'm still looking into it all, do bigger company's with loads of drivers on their books not get the school work?

no idea about where you live but here we have 2 options,

1) buy a hack, then the hack plate is you're ops licence & apply for you're own run

2) contract to someone else & do the run for them, ok they take a cut,but normally only around 10%, on my run i do it in a mini bus, it takes about 3-4 hrs a day, bearing in mind that you are always done by 9 ish, i have no fuel to pay/upkeep of the vehicle but obviously the bus owners take a cut, if it was my own i wouldnt earn a lot more as i would have my fuel to pay & a few more miles on my motor , im happy with mine , i do want my own though, purely for the reason that i will get a contract, 2 -3 yrs or whatever, atm , the owners can take it off me & give me another one with less or more cash , so no security ( after a new motor STILL !! so need to know its a regular income  ) taxi driving is a bit like trucking though, you are you're own boss pretty much, lot less stress also, no tachos to worry about/deadlines etc & you are home every night if you want to be , i just do my school run mon-fri & graft on a fri night ( rarely) but mostly on a sat night after the match till about 1 ish then kebab time & im away  , that's fine for me , although if you are the shy retiring type ( like me    ) you might think twice, there are a lot of nutters out there ! with my school run & a sat night i earn more that what you quoted with a shedload of time off !! just play on me bike pretty much mon - fri

I gave up private hire work a couple of years ago, living in a rural area there just was't the work around and a marriage split caused problems. I went back to part-time bus driving, doing rail replacement work mostly at weekends, with occasional nights. Good Friday job paid about £220 for a 12 hour standby shift, same Saturday Sunday and Monday, less stoppages of course! A lot of hanging around and I got done early 3 nights. :) Probably drove a bus abut 80 miles in the 4 days. :)

You're better off lorry driving.

The cab driving game is just that a game ', it's nothing like it use to be.saying that if you keep your costs low then u can survive.if you going for a new cab then your costs will be high .buy one 3/4 years old if possible

Have you thought about agency work for the lorry driving?

Think logically, there's a nationwide shortage of lorry and bus drivers, there is a glut of taxi and private hire drivers. Who is likely to be more in demand?
