The day I start worrying about a PH nicking a pub job off me, will be the day I go see the doctor about being stressed. If it were down to me, we'd stop doing pub jobs, as around here, they are getting worse and worse.

andy,

its ok not to worry, but next time youve sat there 10 minutes and realise that a ph car (or another hc) has taken your passengers, please dont get mad, get even.

When working off the radio, do you get out of your cab to go in pubs to get punters out at night? Or do you just pull up out the front and hope they come out at the right time?

depends on the pub. a normal pub in the suburbs then why would you not go in? the quicker you get them in the car the quicker you finish and on to the next job.
however in a big city centre pub then you've got no chance of finding them. if they want the cab then they should be outside waiting for you not the other way around.
if they get poached by someone else its more likely to be a HC rather than a PH doing the poaching. happens all the time :(

Just to follow on this line, we had a driver robbed and mugged, just cos he tried to be helpful and went into a pub to get a punter, everyone was up in arms and decided the best method would be to be on time, allow 3 min. waiting time and if they dont come out, leave or pick up another fare.
As for other PH or HC pinching your fare, were they really worth getting in the first place if they could not wait for your car ?.

Yo Le Shark. A man after me own heart.

Bugger em. If they wont come out in 3 minutes, let em walk home.

Next time they book, they will be there.

We have to train our customers.

Equally however, we mustn't be late for them, because when we are, that encourages them to stay in the pub rather than come out to us.

Also agree with Steveo though. It does depend on the pub.

Doesn't your second paragraph contradict your first?

I personally never go inside a pub to get a punter I don't even knock on front doors or ring door bells, if the punter can't be bothered to keep a look out for me then I can't be bothered to wait for them.

If some punters can be a bonus to you by looking out for you then why can't they all?

Not really, if some drivers knock on punters doors then the chances are they will expect the next driver to do so.

I will have 20 quid on Southport Private Hire being over 20 stone!

Sorry Southport but that is the attitude I can't abide, 'the customer should be sooo grateful we condesend to carry them'.

I want punters in my car and away, a quiet pub then I open the door and shout 'taxi'. A private house, I knock the door, I don't want to sit there for ten minutes before I discover the telephonist has got it wrong. A busy pub, ask the doorman if he knows who ordered it, they have invariably seen someone looking out.

That is me, but some guys are like Southport. Half our guys can't even be bothered to press the 'soon to clear' button.

Like I've already said, if some punters can be ready on time and looking out for you by either looking out of their front window or waiting near the front door of the pub then why can't others?

Out of interest at what time of night do you stop knocking on doors? Or would you give it a miss if it was too late and there was no sign of life in the house?

Don't you think knocking on front doors increases your chances of hoax calls?

Knocking on doors. No time limit, but I am sensitive enough to knock gently and not ring bell.

We have CLI so our hoaxers are very very limited.

As i and others have said, i want the punter in the car ASAP. small pubs you can go in to shout 'taxi' (of course i should be shouting 'private hire car'!!) and once i've got the right punter im gone no waiting around. Big pubs or clubs i normally give them 5 mins then call in a no fare and control give them a ring if it was booked on a mobile.

i ALWAYS go and knock on doors. why? . im normally there early or the punter may not relise im outside. but i know what you mean, it is a pain in the ass when they book a time and then cant be bothered to be looking out for me at that time, but then people are lazy (just like some taxi drivers). and yes the punter will expect the next driver to do it because thats what we tell the drivers to do wherever possible. i think its rude just to sit outside beeping you horn, especially after dark where neighbours may have little ones in bed asleep.

if i get to a house at something like 3am in the morning and it looks like no one is up then i get control to give them a ring and tell them im outside.

maybe you dont like to do that but that up to you and your company. its company policy for us because we think the customer is king, without them we will have nothing. so keep them happy and they keep using you.

we just been awarded a 100% score by the LPHCA grading body, so we must be doing something right.
