Usually the service intervals are longer than petrol vehicles, also no need to keep on replacing leads and plugs.

On my old petrol Mondeo I changed the plugs every 30-40,000 or so, and the leads about double that. I thought the oil changes were about the same now, but didn't diesels used to need more frequent oil changes?

The Mondeo would run fine with £15 oil changes every 7,000 miles or so, but my new Passat costs nearly £200 for a service that is basically just an oil change. Does last nearly 20,000 miles though.

Timing belts, air filters etc about the same.

TBH I wouldn't rule out petrol because of servicing - my old Mondeo did about 235,000 with just basic engine servicing as above. I wonder if the turbo, fuel pump etc on my Passat will manage this?

The AA once told me that even if the battery on a diesel was as flat as a pancake it you would still get home as long as you didn't turn the engine off.

My Mondeo never left me stranded (well it did once when a driveshaft failed, but I had a bit of warning but didn't get it replaced, so I kind of blame myself  ) while my Passat has packed up twice in 52,000.

And diesels also get warmer quicker in winter.

Isn't it the other way round??

Heard on the grapevine diesel will go up another 8p a litre, before it starts to drop again, the reason its so high is because we are having to import fuel mainly due to the Buncefield fuel depot fire.

Don't forget you do not have to go to the dealer to get your car serviced, to keep the car in warranty you only have to go to a garage that is VAT registered - £200 for a service is a lot of dosh just for a few filters and oil.

Kwik fit do oil and filter changes for all VW Skoda and Audi for £18, you just have to get it done every 10k instead of 20k as they do not have the long life oil and if you read your service book it says you can do this :D
