I have just had a loverly 10 days off away from it all at my villa on the coast. So it's back to it tomorrow for a few hours.
Back to the origin of this thread.
You 'butters' don't realise what the job was like 40 years ago. The 'ollie' crowd were in their infantcy. The work was every day was like a saturday night. There was the kipper season but there was work if you knew where and when.
It is difficult to explain what it was like then compaired to now.
It takes longer to earn the £ now than what it did then.
My first day/nights take/earning was £4.7.9p nett.( four pounds, seven shillings, and nine pence.) The last job that I had before I done the knowledge paid £10 a week. It was nine months later on a bank holiday friday night that I grossed £10.

Yes, they spoke English and held UK passports back then.

The Met actually pursued cases of touting, opposed to the current 4000 touts who work unhindered, and tax free nowadays. :?

That I cannot remember. But I used to take out the 'wangle' cab that was a FX3 with a meter that you had to wind up before you went to work. It had a metal flag that you had to flick down to start the meter. Flick too hard and the thing would do a 360 and almost take off your hand..
Date I got my badge was 15th March 1962.
(Now going back to gods waiting room for a lie down as the excitment of here is too fast for me.)

You will become old and cynical regardless of this game, it comes with age,the only thing is, that there is so many targets in this game for us grumpies, when all said and done, the guy who will unite the trade is a moderate, extremes from either side will win nothing, someone who understands the customer and the driver is the chap

I can see this is going to come as a shock but you are right. Everything has a time and a place and more often or not it is beyond our understanding anyway.

I don't believe in someone uniting a trade as such but I do believe in everyone stepping forward to the line for good or for bad and the trade uniting its self. A true benevolent dictator wills rewards, loyalty and ability and not egos.

When we all take that step we won't look to blame anyone for our weaknesses or lack of understanding.

I don’t resent a life of service as long as one is in service to himself and his family. I do however resent a life of servitude where my job in life is to give others their position and status when they are supposed t be in service to me.

I know who I am and I don’t have to kiss anyone on the arse for my existence. Seeing what others are prepared to take or hang on to just to survive in their little illusion gives me the bile.

Sometimes it is better to be counted regardless of the circumstances or the outcome. Just to be there is enough and [edited by admin] the consequences. :-|

Having said that, I agree with a lot YOU say too, most of the owners have found themselves in this position thru default and good luck rather than any business acumen, but the answer is not to ruin the trade or the guys that are only working by current rules, overall the system works well, but there is always room for improvement, and in time I have no doubt there will be room for more cabs. The market WILL decide, and if that fact hasn't come out in this debate! then who knows, more time and money will be wasted fighting a non exsistant problem instead of, well, huvin a bloody good night out on the [edited by admin] :D :D
