hmmmm............... well this discussion shows how differently people view the facts. I believe the gate was fine but the police thought that opening it would solve crowd problems outside the stadium in fact it had the reverse effect something that should have been properly investigated at the time instead of allowing the stupid blame game that followed. Like many i remember the TV pictures I also remember the Heysel pictures and this was very different. Heysel was the fans fault this wasn't and I never understood the amount of time and effort put into blaming them. I hope now everyone can move on and put the past behind them

In an attempt to ease pressure outside the ground, Police Chief Superintendent David Duckenfield, the senior police officer responsible for policing the match, ordered an exit gate to be opened.

What other options were available to the police to alleviate the dangerous overcrowding outside the ground?

Trying to alleviate overcrowding outside the ground by allowing unrestricted access into already overcrowded areas within a confined space, trapped by a metal fence around the pitch, were not the actions that would be taken by a sane man.

Not too sure, crowds aint my area of expertise, but I would avoid the option that kills 96 innocents - and then I wouldn't spend the next 27 years lying my a** off about it if I did.

Firstly, the fans had tickets. The police lied when they said they didn't. The fans statements were altered to make it appear they didn't. This has been proven now. Secondly, ticket holding fans were outside the main gate waiting to come in. Leppings Lane was full and the order was given to open the gates and let them in but they didn't shut the gates to the tunnel which led through to the pens. If these gates had been shut the fans would have gone to the right and left to the side pens which were mostly empty. Chief Superintendent Duckenfield lied through his teeth saying drunken fans with no tickets had forced their way through the gates. In 2015 when giving evidence at the inquest he finally admitted his lies. Since then South Yorkshire police have spent 4 million pounds on solicitors repeating the same lies at the inquest. The current Chief Constable of South Yorkshire has today been suspended ..........freemasons.??.

South Yorkshire Police in news shocker again. Orgreave, Hillsborough and the Rotherham Child Sex abuse scandal. They're proving value for money.

That doesn't answer my question though does it.

For some reason Grandad despite the very clear findings of the inquest you seem determined to try to deflect blame away from the police and onto the fans, as to what else they should have done before opening the outer gates they should have closed the entrances to the two central pens which were already completely full which would have diverted the fans into the two pens on either side which were relatively empty.

Where do I blame the fans? There was a serious risk of people being injured or worse outside the ground. How long would it have taken to get the the two central pens closed off? No doubt longer that was available for the fans outside the ground. It must have been a split second decision that went terribly wrong. Now don't get me wrong here, What happened after the event by the police and lawyers since does need addressing through the proper channels.

One of the polices main duties was crowd control, is there pushing and shoving in crowds of course there is but it doesn't normally lead to dozens of deaths,it strikes me that Duckenfield was totally out of his depth and lacked the experience to handle this match.
As to closing the entrances to the central pens it wasn't exactly rocket science that most fans would try to get into the central pens for the best view and once at capacity these pens should have been closed off as had been done in previous highly attended games.

Why was the game held at a ground without a valid safety certificate?

Who decided one turnstile was good enough? "Entry was possible only via one of seven decrepit turnstiles, a restriction that led to dangerous overcrowding outside the ground before kick-off"
