There's a wikipedia page about Good Samaritan laws, but it's North American-oriented.

Another interesting page about the legal aspect (re resusitation) in the UK context. I think it basically says that unless you do something really negligent then you're unlikely to be sueable. The page is 7 years old though, and the UK has become more litigious in that time.

I asked my LA why I have to carry a first aid kit when I am not quallified to use it and their reply was that although I am not qualified, another person present may be qualified.

They tried to implement first aid kits in Sefton years ago, it did not happen. if anything in the kit gets contaminated and is used, then in my opinion the responsibility would lie with the council, and they would be open to being sued.... they did not like that...

I suppose we could always ask the injured party to sign a disclaimer before letting them have a plaster. :D
