aren't all taxi drivers independants

Some are some work on a network, when there is no radio work they head for the ranks which can be full of non network cars (independents)

Surely the independants need the ranks more than those that are working systems. Perhaps the non independants should be a little less greedy and consider the independants a little more

When they're on their school runs we fill the ranks with the cars not busy on radio work. Everyone who gets off a train, visiting the area, gets our card. We get the return fare and continue growing.

It's no good the independents doing it. They're not available for the return!!

If they wish to, they can join us. Until then, they're competition.

Well as they say it's dog eat dog. Every taxi has just as much right to the rank space as the other independant or otherwise.

I don't disagree with you, Toots.

If you go back to my original comment, I was looking forward to the schools going back to get them off the ranks. At no time did I suggest I wanted legislation passed to exclude everyone but me from the ranks.

But, now you mention it..........

I didn't intend to come across as if I did want that. I was curious as to the difference of the independants and the circuit users on the ranks and that is all really. Taxis are all the same to me that's why I asked the original question in the first place. I didn't realise there was a difference amonst the ranks so to speak. :D

In our borough we have half a dozen companies or radio nets, varying from 3 or 4 cars to our 66 cars. There are also about 30 or 40 independents who work alone, primarily on school runs and the ranks. The ranks are generally nice and busy during the day just as they're away on their school runs!

In truth, having wound you up and shown my competitive streak (!), we generally end up pulling on and off the back of the ranks with radio work. If we get within four places of the front, we are permitted the option to log off the system and await a 'walker.' It works very well for us.

It's just that this week, with schools off and being middle of the month, the ranks have been quite clogged up.

There are about 250 HC in the borough, I believe.

HC's wind me up for different reasons here and I wish there was only 250 of them as well. I'm generally friendly with them and they with me, they let out and they let me in and they don't moan at me for anything which I suppose is a blessing cos they can't half moan

A professor of mathematics sent an e-mail to his wife. It read:

Dear Wife,
You must realise that you are 54 years old, and I have certain needs which you are no longer able to satisfy. I am otherwise happy with you as a wife, and I sincerely hope you will not be hurt or offended to learn that by the time you receive this letter, I will be at the Grand Hotel with my 18-year-old teaching assistant. I'll be home before midnight.

Your Husband

When he arrived at the hotel, there was a faxed letter waiting for him that read as follows:

Dear Husband,
You, too, are 54 years old, and by the time you receive this letter, I will be at the Breakwater Hotel with the 18-year-old pool boy. Being the brilliant mathematician that you are, you can easily appreciate the fact that 18 goes into 54 a lot more times than 54 goes into 18.

Don't wait up.
