The van was an EV too..... i bet the batteries are rubbish now

Quote:
A small family business has claimed to be £40,000 out of pocket as their van has been trapped in a central London car park for over two years.

Mark Lucas parked his electric Vauxhall van at a stacked car park at Rathbone Square, just off Oxford Street, in December 2022.

Mr Lucas told the BBC he was unable to retrieve the van due to a “mechanical malfunction” at the car park and was told in January 2023 that new parts were needed to fix the issue.

Ship almost crashes into mans house

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cy8nk279ydyo

A man in Norway woke up to find a huge container ship had run aground and crashed into his front garden.

The 135m-ship (443ft) missed Johan Helberg's house by metres at about 05:00 local time (03:00 GMT) on Thursday.

and now the earworm in my head is "what shall we do with the drunken sailor"

The Lincolnshire and Rutland businesses named and shamed by the government for underpaying staff

A veterinary practice, a nursery and an outdoor pursuits company are among the Lincolnshire businesses named and shamed by the government for underpaying staff.

Seven firms in the county were found to have been in breach of the National Minimum Wage law, data released today (May 29) by the Department for Business and Trade reveals.

A single employee from Clear Ridge Veterinary Surgery in Empingham Road, Stamford received £1,531.55, after HMRC found it had failed to properly compensate them for 12 months in 2019 and 2020.

Man arrested for feeding pigeons (in cheshire)

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-14876217/Bird-brains-Moment-man-surrounded-police-arrested-feeding-pigeons-town-centre.html

This is the shocking moment a man was surrounded by police officers for feeding pigeons.

The incredible footage includes the man, wearing a beanie, being handcuffed and being pushed against a police car door as three officers surround him.

A large bag of birdseed can be seen next to him on the kerbside.

The nicked bird feeder can be heard saying to officers 'I feed birds that's my religion' whilst shoppers watch on.

Footage later shows the distressed man hunched over and being led into the back of the police van where the door is shut and an officer can be heard saying he is 'under arrest'.

The incident happened in Ellesmere Port town centre, in Cheshire, on Friday last week.

Tony Gath who witnessed the incident said he was 'disturbed' by what he had seen.

Tony said: 'It was disgusting behaviour, all they had to do was educate the man on where he can and can't feed the birds, then send him on his way.

'I'm disturbed that they felt that level of intimidation and power was acceptable at all, not just in public.'

According to Wirral Council's official website there are 'no laws' that the council can effectively use to stop people feeding wild birds.

But Environmental Health may be able to 'take action in significant and excessive cases' where rotten food waste is accumulating or the bird feeding can be shown to be the cause of an infestation of rats or mice.

Cheshire Police said the council had previously reported to the police that feeding of the birds in the area was causing an 'increase in vermin'.

They also said officers only arrested the man who was feeding birds after be became 'verbally and physically aggressive' towards an officer.

A spokesperson for the force said: 'At around 2.15pm on Friday 27th June, officers on patrol in Ellesmere Port town centre spoke to a man who was feeding birds in the area.

'The council had previously reported to police that the feeding of the birds was causing an increase in vermin in the area and that they needed the details of the male to speak to him.

'An officer attempted to engage with the man, but he became verbally and physically aggressive towards the officer.

'He was then arrested for a public order offence - the man subsequently calmed down and was de-arrested.'

Is Uber really saying that, as they can't now use an illegal workforce, prices may have to go up? :-k

Illegal migrant crackdown risks pushing up takeaway prices, warns Uber

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/20 ... ay-prices/

A Home Office crackdown on illegal “gig economy” workers could push up the cost of delivering takeaways, Uber has said.

The ride-hailing giant, which operates the Uber Eats take-out app, warned its delivery expenses could rise in response to new rules intended to “clamp down on illegal working”.

In accounts filed at Companies House, Uber’s UK division said it “welcomed” a Home Office effort to dissuade migrants and people smugglers from risking trips on small boats across the Channel to Britain.

However, it warned that “new legislative requirements could have an adverse impact on our business, including expenses necessary to comply with such laws and regulations”.

Takeaway apps have become a route for undocumented workers to earn a living in the UK, with illegal workers drawn to the industry by historically limited right to work checks. Delivery riders are also known to sell their accounts or rent them out on social media to “substitutes”, who may be working illegally, with little vetting.

The opportunity to secure work for newly arrived migrants with no documents has been judged as a pull factor for small boat crossings, with the Home Office demanding delivery companies tackle the problem.

Deliveroo, Uber Eats and Just Eat have all voluntarily introduced “right to work” checks on their apps over the past year, including enhanced facial recognition and document checks.

They have kicked thousands of workers who failed checks off of their apps.

However, in July, the Home Office warned there “continues to be abuse in the system” and secured commitment from the companies that they would go further to spot misuse and suspend accounts.

As home secretary, Yvette Cooper had also planned to change the law to force all gig economy companies to check the legal status of their workers to dissuade migrants arriving on small boats from risking the trip to Britain. Ms Cooper, now the Foreign Secretary, was replaced by Shabana Mahmood as home secretary in a Cabinet reshuffle on Friday.

Officials have also started sharing data on known asylum hotels with delivery companies so they can monitor for attempts by undocumented workers to use their apps.

In its accounts for its UK business, which includes its ride-hailing and Uber Eats division, Uber said its revenues had climbed from £5.3bn in 2023 to £6.5bn last year.

However, its profits dropped from £29.4m to £21.6m. Uber blamed the fall on an “increase in administrative expenses” in its food delivery division.

In February, Uber told The Telegraph it had blocked thousands of accounts since April 2024 after introducing tougher right-to-work checks to block illegal substitutions.

In August, the Home Office’s immigration enforcement teams claimed to have spoken to 1,780 individuals over the course of a single week in July, leading to 280 arrests for suspected illegal working. It said 53 individuals were now having their asylum status reviewed.

Glad it's not just me amazed at the Uber comments.

Shadow business secretary slams Uber Eats for migrant comments

https://www.cityam.com/shadow-business- ... -comments/

Shadow Business Secretary Andrew Griffith has hit out at Uber Eats for saying that a crackdown on illegal migration will cause takeaway prices to rise.

Takeaway apps have become a route for undocumented workers to earn a living in the UK, with illegal workers drawn to the industry by historically limited right to work checks.

Delivery riders are also known to sell their accounts or rent them out on social media to “substitutes”, who may be working illegally, with little vetting.

In a post on X, Griffith said: “Uber Eats, if you cannot succeed without the use of illegal workers, you are not a business but a criminal enterprise.”

Griffith was responding to Uber UK’s comments in accounts filed at Companies House, where the division said it “welcomed” a Home Office effort crackdown on small boats crossing the channel with illegal migrants, but warned that “new legislative requirements could have an adverse impact on our business, including expenses necessary to comply with such laws and regulations”.

But Griffith said that Uber UK must work harder to track their own riders: “As a technology optimist, I know you can solve this with innovation: location tracking, AI and biometrics.

“From pedal cadence to accelerometer-detected driving style, we all leave hard to spoof digital signatures. We track tennis ball sized objects in deep space – you can certainly figure out who is collecting from the local kebab shop!”

The Conservative Party have been vocal critics of Labour’s Employments Rights Bill, which they say will push up costs for businesses and made it harder to hire staff.

”It’s a compliance issue and your ‘customer promise’ must be a clean supply chain which contains no illegal or criminal people visiting your customers homes,” Griffith said.

City AM has contacted Uber UK for comment.

We have all thought at different times uber have acted like a criminal enterprise and this statement in their submissions to Companies House about using illegal immigrants/cheap labour should warrant an investigation and prosecution of uber.

https://www.msn.com/en-gb/cars/news/10-lincolnshire-roads-at-tipping-point-which-need-major-works-soon/ar-AA1RyRsg?ocid=winp2fptaskbar&cvid=69300f66f1024c92ab67be10f68e0a34&ei=8]Lincolnshire to repair 10 worst roads

Lincolnshire County Council has named ten roads suffering from wear and tear, which it says need urgent attention next year. It is hoping to complete the projects, which have a total estimated cost of £12million, in the next financial year.

The authority warns that if they aren’t repaired quickly, the roads will reach a “tipping point” which will cause them to degrade even faster. The ten proposed projects are:

A15 around Folkingham – £850,000
A17 Wigtoft Bypass – £1,500,000
A1031 North Cotes – £1,200,000
Lincoln’s University Roundabout, the connecting Ropewalk, and Yarborough Road – £3,000,000
B1517 Grantham Road, Sleaford – £1,600,000
A153 either side of Anwick – £1,300,000
A52/A607 Great Northern Gyratory, Grantham – £600,000
A151 Bourne Road roundabouts, Colsterworth – £1,000,000
A606/A6121/B1081 Empingham Road / Scotgate / North Street Junction – £700,000
A1175 Barnack Road, Uffington – £600,000

nearly all that section ( Stamford end) has had developments included 2 housing estates a supermarket a nursing home and a load of granny flats built in the last 5 years but the council never thought to ask the developers for a contribution towards this cost

The Highways Committee will meet next week to decide whether the projects should be put into the 2026/27 budget. The work will vary from surface treatments (around 40mm deep) to full-depth reconstructions (360mm deep), and should allow the roads to last the next 20 years.

Council agrees changes to ‘poorly designed’ Lincoln estate
Hold put on major Lincoln housing plan that's 'too vague by half'
A council report says: “The roads being promoted are now at a tipping point where, if the proposed schemes are not progressed, there is a significant risk of rapid and accelerating deterioration in their structural integrity. These locations are at the stage where deterioration typically intensifies, as observed on other major A and B roads across the county.

Related video: Hilsea lane closure to last seven weeks as part of £52 million bus lane improvement project (Dailymotion)

“Without timely intervention, this will likely result in higher repair costs, increased disruption, and elevated safety risks.” It says that short-term alternatives, like patch repairs, will end up being less cost-effective in the long run.

If the costs increase, some projects may be pushed back into the following year, where they will be given the highest priority. Other projects could also be brought forward if there’s extra money left in the budget.

This list doesn’t include major projects with government support, such as the North Hykeham Relief Road, which is due to begin work early next year.

Maybe the end of my drive where it meets the road might get repaired but I suspect it'll be the town end which is very rough

Members of the audience at a Christmas show in Brighton have criticised it as "worst production they have seen in a long time", with many walking out.

The performance of Wicked Wizard of Oz: A Cirque Spectacular Christmas show at the Brighton Centre, which is running for two days on Tuesday and Wednesday, is promoted on the World's Greatest Productions website as "combining the magic of cirque with the charm of a classic tale".

When I saw the advertising for it, I did think about taking the little ones in my family, along with some bigger ones.

But I'm more than delighted to announce I didn't attend, but if I had, then I would have gotten a refund.

Mrs Sx is a massive fan of the Wizard of Oz, so it was a near miss. However, she keeps dropping hints about this.
