You are quite right it would be simplier if the government said that all taxis or ph 'taxis' should be purpose built and that all such vehicles should be WAV's but what about the poor people who just want to be able to access a vehicle on their own 2 legs but can't lift their legs high enough to get into a WAV. The perfect vehicle would be WAV with swingy out seats for those that need that kind of access and an ability to lower itself up and down like buses for those with dicky legs, hips and backs etc. Does such a vehicle exist and if it does is it comfy to drive and can I get it in sparkly pink.

If such a vehicle existed, then the DDA would have been fully applied to the trade by now, and we would all be driving them.
Even if it did exist, I guarantee some disabled minority group would claim they can't use them for some reason or another.

With regard to who drives what it should mostly be about choice from the driver perspective but the LA's should keep a close eye on the % of WAVS etc and have in place legislation to limit either or both of the vehicle types.

Where the trade has a choice of vehicles, the overwhelming majority choose saloon cars. Any attempts at restricting the number of saloon type licences just creates an artificial market for the sale of these licences or the hire of the vehicles. If you don't already have one, you won't get one without shelling out an arm and a leg to someone who has.

It could be illegal to sell plates oh yes and to sell vehicles with plates on or to transfer vehicles over to a third party with a plate on it. The licence plate should be returned to the LA before any vehicles are sold, it's not hard is it

Laws are changed all the time and it's time for a change within the taxi industry lets just hope that any changes that are made are for the good of the industry, the people that work it and the people that use it and not just a few individuals that profit off the backs of others hard work :D

When LTI first brought out wheelchair accessible vehicles.... the changes to the original designs were paid for by the government £2.5 millions as a grant..... a few more million for some fancy motors should be a doddle
