Oh and with our company we have some vehicles that are zero rated for VAT but we can still claim 100% of the VAT back. In fact at one time all our vehicles were zero rated and we would get a nice cheque from the VAT man every quarter.

So how does that work?

Passenger vehicles that can carry 9 or more passengers are zero rated for VAT. You don't charge the customer VAT but you claim back all the VAT that you have paid out. Of course you don't have to fill all the seats, in fact you can run a 9 passenger vehicle with just 1 passenger if you wish.

Presumably licensed by VOSA rather than your LA, with full D1 licensed driver?

In the crudest way of looking at it, he's making a loss if he's spending more than he's earning.

Anyone who is spending more than they are earning is making a loss, you don't need to be VAT registered to do that.
Of course if you are a one man band and you do mainly cash work VAT registration is not for you. Anyway it would be unlikly that a one man band would be earning enough to get above the VAT threshold. If you are a one man band and the vast majority of your work is account work, becoming VAT registered would be worth looking into. You don't have to be earning above the threshold to become VAT registered, you can voluntery register if you want. You can also go on the flat rate system if you wish so that you don't have to do all the paperwork. You collect the 20% VAT from the customer and pay a flat rate to the VATMAN. I think it is 9.5% for our industry so for every £200 of VAT you collect you pay the VATMAN £95 and keep the £105.

I'm VAT registered as part of my business is running vintage buses with over 9 seats, so that is zero rated; I also buy vintage bus parts (standard rate), and sell them abroad (zero rate), so usually get a cheque back from HMRC every 3 months. :)

I also get back the VAT on the lease charges for the Toyota Auris. 8)

ref VAT, surely you realise how it works? i do a simple return every quarter and ive had the fuel VAT back, so HMRC get some, but its only what ive collected, or should i not bother with the 20% i get back (making my diesel £1.18 this week)

Oh yes, I know how it works. You collect VAT on behalf of HMG and you get to keep back any you have already payed out.
Net result is you pay VAT every quarter unless you make a loss.

I dont pay it, my customer pays it to me, i take out my bit and send HMRC the balance, result? - i get my fuel VAT back

If I was not 99% account work id not be VAT registered, but i am, plus i recouped £2000 worth of VAT off my Tourneo that id have had to write off otherwise

Ive been VAT registered for 15 years, through 2 sole traderships and a Ltd company, so i think ive a reasonable grasp of how it works, thanks in part to my accountant helping me before I sacked him.....lol

I suppose you could say that VAT is a scary thing until you have worked with it, then it not such a demon.

I dont know many S/E cabbies who would want a fuelcard, what with all fuel purchases being recorded along with dates/times and mielages, it doesnt leave much leeway for losing any for the taxman....lol
