I've been a member of a union for many years.

Nationally I think they are ok.

Locally ..................................................?

As a working "young man" back many years ago, you/I belonged to a Union and never thought twice about it - you also new that a certain amount of your subscription (that was taken weekly) went to the Labour party..........again you never thought twice about it as they were the working mans party. Fast forward 45+ years, the Unions and the Labour party have changed drastically.............I would not have to think of belonging, or contributing to either, times have changed big time...........so have I.

Having said that. To get out of the hole that we are in - you need genuine Trade Unions with virtues/aims of bygone days..................hell will probably freeze over first.

I was in the NUM.....you dont get much more union than that but did they sign me up as a member of Wilsons Labour party without asking me?

I hope not

Tbh I do not think anyone was as such asked. I came from a council estate background = very working class = never thought about being anything other than Labour. If they had asked, then you would have been very much the odd person at the time if you said no. It was an era when the Labour party seemed to be the true representative of Industrial and other ground floor workers, as Bliar demonstrated all of that has changed. He along with B r o o n made numerous law changes that prevent Unions flexing their muscles, along with sweeteners in the guise of "Grants" to keep things calm.

I served my time at British Leyland which was of course a closed shop. The union in the toolroom where I worked was the AUEW. The first thing that I did was to opt out of the political levy.

So the Labour parties membership numbers include union members signed up to Labour without consent and the unions are bunging Labour and getting MP's elected by members (who dont KNOW they are members)...

this stinks

A political levy in a monthly contribution to your chosen union does NOT make you a member of any political party.

What's better, people in a normal everyday job funding part of a party, or a few millionaire bankers funding the other?

I wonder who's more in touch with reality?

The school cleaner or the Bwanker?

I'd say the millionaires get what they pay for. The school cleaner, like the rest of us, also gets what the millionaires pay for.

And if the school cleaner thinks that's going to change under a Labour government, then the Bwankers are more in touch with reality.
They are the ones who've bankrupted the economy and nobody is going to make them accountable for their actions. The rich and untouchable own the Labour party, same as they own the Tories, Liberals and UKIP.

no but if that union MAKES you a member of Labour without consent they are out of order, just to influence MP selection...

That's right - its far better having unelected bosses of private firms donating massive sums to political parties - indeed, its far better having the right wing press lauded and kowtowed to by politicians.

nope I don't - but I believe the press has a deep seated hatred towards trades unions, they prey on their gullible readers.

thankfully print is almost dead - so the part newspapers will play in the future will be minimal.
