Had an ASAP to LHR this afternoon.

To be brave, took the Meon Valley road. Loads of snow. My mid-east passenger was impressed; He'd only seen it once before in 2004.

Round trip only took half hour longer than usual and it was a cr@p Friday anyway so I'm chuffed!!

we got about 8 inches thursday morning brought the town to a standstill took an hour just to do one fare and then 2 and a half hours to get back home ! thats the trouble when every road in the town is a hill !! it only takes half a dozen bmw drivers to block all the roads But seriously though I got stuck 4 times taking about 20 minutes each time to dig the ice out from under the wheels and point the vehicle downhill again it just wasn't possible to work. Today conditions were almost as grim but it was possible to work so I did.

I take it skippy youve got a 4x4 then or you live somewhere very flat !

Only the Valley floor is flattish, its all hills otherwise some af them are 1 in 4, I dont know why its not made law in the UK that you have to put winter tyres on, I do every November and have never been stuck yet.
The problem with most modern cars is they now have the low profile wide tyres on is it any wonder they get stuck.
Go to a scrappy and get 2 steel rims from a base model of your car and get the winter tyres fitted after winter revert back to your normal ones
The best way up a hill if you have a diesel is select 1st and let the car go up its self, with next to no throttle, the same for coming back down but try not to use the breaks

In Sweden (yes I know, yawn) you have to have winter tyres on by law, the ones with the metal studs fitted.

Makes the world of difference, although a bit noisy when its dry.

I am confused :? I can understand the metal studs for snow and ice but on the roads that are clear, How much of the tyre is in contact with the road surface? To me, with no knowlege of thes things it would seem like driving on ball bearings when it is dry.

in germany by law "winter" tyres are required, but they arent studded, just a chunky tread i think...
