OK, here's how it works.
There's a function in the software whereby you can change any posted word to read something else. It's aimed at swearwords and the like.
So there are a few swearwords in the list of words that are to be changed, but since the other site was defaming us then we also included references to that site in the words that would be changed.
So, for example, we could include the word 'clown' in the banned lists and set it so that if someone posted it then it would come up 'funny guy'.
So if someone posted 'TDO you are a clown', it would show as 'TDO you are a funny guy'.
However, what I did the other night was to change 'funny guy' to show [edited by admin] - that was to make it clear that it had been edited, and is thus less likely to cause confusion.
So whenever any of the banned words come up it'll instead show [edited by admin].
However, it should be pointed out that no-one actually changes the messages manually - it's done by the software. So although we can't read the PMs the software changes any of the banned words in the same way as it does with ordinary messages.
Another important point is that if the replacement word or phrase is changed then the message will change even if it was written ages ago - the replacement phrase applies to all messages, however old.
For example, if clown had been changed to funny guy when a message was posted ages ago, then if I change the replacement from funny guy to jester then it will apply retrospectively, so anytime the word clown is in a message it will show on the forum as jester, however old it is.
I think the reason is because the original post stays as it is in the database. But when you click on a thread and it pulls the message up then it will show on your computer with any edits at that time, and not as they were set up in the past.
It's basically all about stopping people swearing incessantly and to stop people disseminating lies about the forum, that's all.
