Had a taxi to collect my car, nice guy driving, Bulgarian, rents the wreck of an E7 off a base...

30% commission, and he pays the fuel

gets £35 to BHX, ends up with £17 for himself

A hackney journeyman took an account Heathrow job for the weekend, the owner contacted the firm and canceled the job.

Guessing the deal was 50/50 with the owner paying the fuel.

Simply not viable for the owner.

A friend in the bus industry was having a whinge on FB about the prices, £1.70-odd a litre. I looked up the price in Luxembourg, usually the cheapest place in near-Europe for diesel. Today's price was €2.20 a litre (£1.78 at today's exchange rate). In October last year when i was there, diesel was €0,98 a litre, about 78p.

My fuel card this week gives me £1.3256 plus VAT a litre. makes it £1.59-ish. Christmas week it was £1.12 a litre plus VAT. £1.33. At least with the fuel card I get a week to pay plus 1p litre to the card supplier, and the staisfaction of going in a very expensive garage that accepts that card and knowing I'm "only" paying £1.59. :)

My Fuel card price is approximate £1.60 this week but a couple of days ago they sent me this in an Email:

I wanted to make you aware of the significant price rise we’re anticipating that will take effect on Sunday 13th March 23:59 (Esso - Friday 11th March 23:59).

When your next weekly price becomes applicable the cost of fuel is likely to increase by at least 20p per litre – of course we can’t predict with any certainty what will happen over the next couple of days but unfortunately prices on current markets remain high.

I know this is an incredibly tough time for any company that relies on vehicles but, if it makes sense for your business to take advantage of current prices, then please do so before the dates & times I’ve mentioned above.

Over the years we have used several different fuel cards from different suppliers and every one of them has promised below pump prices and everyone of them has eventually ended up charging us more than the pump price without warning.
