Does anyone get involved in a charity run of some sort at Christmas?

I, along with one of our TDO colleagues who may or may not wish to identify himself, was involved in one today for the local special needs school. I was a last minute replacement and it was my first experience of such a run.

The cars were decorated and drove, in convoy, to a local hostelry. The kids were fed. We were fed.

Father Christmas was extremely late turning up and there was a chance one of us may have to step into the breach. Everyone was looking in my direction due to my never having learned how to use razor blades!!! Thankfully, he turned up finally.

The day's experience was most rewarding and enjoyable and I'm putting my name down for next year.

I think all drivers that do these runs are a credit to the trade, and one day I might get my bum off this seat and arrange something similar down here, as there are many good folks who would contribute and partake.

But I would rather someone else started it and I helped them.

I was'nt aware the GMB had a Branch Secretary training facility in your area?

We had deserving, appreciative people!...........And not a Londoner or Scot in sight!!!

I don't mind people knowing it was me.

I try to get involved with one charity at Christmas. Last year it was the St Martins in The Field appeal. Next year who knows what ever I think is a good cause. But I do like to help something at this time of year.

Is it a selfless act, or is it really all about feeling good about oneself?

Is it possible to be charitable without a feeling of smug self satisfaction?

I avoid giving to charity (except the poppy appeal) but a few hours and a drop of fuel wouldnt worry me too much, with cash you never know how much reaches the intended recipients.

'Smug self-satisfaction' was actually a phrase I used to a pasenger in the afternoon after the event. I admit, I did it to feel good about myself. After all, man does everything for a 'profit'. If you don't perceive some 'benefit' to yourself, you don't do it.

But, some kids enjoyed their afternoon as well so I wasn't the only one to benefit.

Oh sorry! From now on no ones getting nothing....... is that better?

id do it cos some of the carers and mums are quite fit....

Isn't that a double negative? meaning that someone will be getting something.
